I need to go back to the doctor to kick depression's *** this time. I tried Prozac and therapy before and was convinced it was a joke, after putting on 50 lbs and getting nowhere with therapy. Any advice with depression and all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you looked at your diet?
Diets loaded with sugars and simple carbs can cause mood swings, depression, fatigue, teary crying, headaches, and generally feeling down. A sugar-free, balanced diet with complex carbs, healthy fats and enough protein makes a world of difference. You'd be surprised at how many people just can't tolerate the amount of sugar they eat.

From the website: "Are you moody or depressed, in need of revitalization and energy, or notice your behavior and mood changes from day to day? Do you have those days that are perfect and you feel on top of the world whereas other days you feel like you have hit rock bottom? Your mood and energy levels may be related to your diet.

What you eat affects your mental functioning. By choosing certain foods, you may be better able to balance your emotional and mental health. Putting the right fuel into your body may affect your performance and make the difference between a happy day and a grumpy day."

I sympathize with you on the weight gain - I gained 40 lbs from taking Paxil. Since then, any time I switch antidepressants, I find out if it causes weight gain and then monitor my weight - if I find my weight is increasing, despite regular diet, then I get off of it. In terms of weight gain, SSRIs (such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc) often cause weight gain. My suggestion would be Wellbutrin. When I started taking it, I didn't lose any weight, but my weight stayed stable. Talk with your doctor about your concerns about weight gain - a good doctor will listen to you and help you find the best anti-d for you with minimal side effects. Hope this helps.

Take 5-HTP. It is the herbal equivalent of an anti-depressant without all the horrible side effects. The NOW brand in the orange bottle is the best and cheapest. Here is a link to read about it:

It actually helps you to lose weight too!

This is a natural herb that does the exact same thing as an anti-depressant without all the side effects. It also helps you to lose weight! I find that the "NOW" brand in the orange bottle works the best. You have to play with the dose to find what works best for you. Good luck!!!

It's probably more the diet than the actual pills, but I know Effexor and Lexapro show no side effect of gaining weight. I heard Paxil can make you gain weight.
