Probably because in biblical times it was common for men to have facial hair. Over the years, it has grown less and less common, and was even part of the rebellion against the Vietnam war in the late 60's and early 70's. That's the main reason some Christian groups don't wear beards or facial hair today - it's considered a sign of rebellion by some.

Why should it be? Unless you have taken the Nazarite vow, you are permitted wide latitude about your hair. Some things are prohibited, which seem to be some peculiar things some pagans did. (rounding corners) The Hasidim disagree, and feel that any trimming of the beard qualifies as rounding corners. Back in the old days shaving was much more difficult.

Under most circumstances, shaving of the beard is a biblical prohibition that only pertains to Jews. Shaving is defined as cutting hair at skin level using a razor or similar single blade. (Modern multi-blade systems meet this standard). However, one is permitted to cut their beard using scissors or other similar devices such as some electric shavers.

Shaving the face was not a common practice in Biblical times. Mostly, only soldiers shaved their faces, so that the enemy could not grab onto them during battle.
