I have two APBT's that I adopted from different shelters that had them placed on death row. It is really sad because there are so many wonderful pure-breds in need of homes but will not ever get one because of the reputation that they are given by a few terrible and irresponsible breeders/owners. Although they can be extremely hyper around new people, the most harm they will ever do to you would be licking your face off. I am a firm believer that no matter what breed, any dog that is raised well and given love, will return it tenfold (or twenty, in my case). Likewise, if they are neglected or taught to fight, they will do what they have learned. My grandmother had a chihuahua that was more angry and vicious than the two of my dogs could ever be. My dogs are also wonderful with the children (though they care less about the mail man!). The worst thing they ever did was uproot my hibiscus tree. I love this breed and will defend them 110%.

As long as the parents of each dog are "a normal" Pit type then there should not be a problem. A 'Pit' is not naturally aggressive to humans however animals are a different subject. Any 'Pit' can be trained to get along with any animal. Smaller dogs bite more than a 'Pit' does. I have raised and owned 'Pits' for over 50 years and have only had one bite someone. That was acceptable since he was trying to steal a pup. Most 'Pit' bites are result of abuse in one form or the other. Every animal including humans have a breaking point. My current 'Pits' live with other dogs, cats and a rabbit.

Like many breeds that were bred for fighting, and some for hunting, they are not being bred carefully enough. In the American South, at least, there are still lots of illegal dog-fighting rings, and they're pretty horrible. That means that many of the local breeders are breeding for aggressive dogs, NOT family dogs.
Temprement is highly heritable in dogs, so the nature of a dog really depends on how it was bred. I know lots of pits that are great dogs, but I have also seen many that had to be destroyed because they were simply innately aggressive.
I think it's sad that the bans are affecting so many dogs, and that many rehabilitatable pits get euthanized at the shelter because they have laws that don't allow them to be adopted out. It is also frustrating that these laws are bleeding out to affect other breeds such as dobermans, rottweilers, and boxers, who are more often loveable than aggressive, but who seem to get the bum rap anyway.
So there's my 2 cents.

It is the bad owner's fault for aggressive APBT's. I am a proud owner of one and she is the sweetest most lovable pup ever. My sister has a pit bull/chow mix and he is almost 2 yrs old and has never shown any type of aggression toward anyone or any other animal. His best friend is a 1 yr old cat. So I believe it has to do with the owner and how they treat their dog.

i actually do own a pitbull...shes only 4 months old and i dont think i could ever see her being a mean dog that just walks up and bites someone for no reason..i think pitbulls and other dogs with a bad rep attack because of quite a few reasons...the owner treating the dog bad and beating it ...people being mean to the dog and taunting it...the owner training the dog to do it..and sometimes even if the dog has been sweet all of its life and never hurt any one ive been told it can become mean cuz a lot of the time pitbulls get bad hip problems..and so it makes them mean...you can go to a store like petsmart and buy a book on pitbulls for training them and their history and it tells you exactly why they might turn on people....my pitbull gets along with my 2 cats..one cats 7 months but theyve known eachother ever since riley...the pitbull...was born and my other cat is almost 2 years and they all get along and play together

Dee Dawg has coated it. i became late in this one simply by fact i became on the vet final evening. (no longer something undesirable, i became there assisting my daughter do kennel accountability.) I actual have 9 canine in my homestead which contain Launi. I actual have had problems with mis-directed exhilaration together with her in the direction of my different canine. One specially. The E collar stopped this for an exceedingly long term then my mom got here to stay and it began lower back. Soooo, out comes the E collar. besides, Dee is right. this is prey force. And a pastime bred Pit isn't unavoidably canine aggressive as this is able to rumble. Launi does no longer have a difficulty with cats. She loves cats. She does no longer have a difficulty with maximum different canine. The German Shepherd in our community? She has a difficulty with him. actual, that is in basic terms understanding what you have and the thank you to paintings with the canine's genetics. And no, on your first question. The gameness is there. you purchase from a superb breeder of pastime Pits and that's what you get. no longer exhibiting *aggression* in the direction of different canine does no longer advise decrease than no circumstances shape or style, the *combat* isn't there. you may no longer have a canine like this and stay with blinders on. the owner would desire to do each thing they'd to do away with the triggers. case in point, while my mom is composed of the homestead, or all of us else, they do no longer seem to be enable to nicely known ANY of my canine till they have calmed. Giving affection to a minimum of one WILL set off a reaction from Launi. extremely some the time it is not something terrible yet there is often the possibility. I do issues while Launi to re-direct the force. She gets a superb quantity of workout. physique and ideas. This canine has come a protracted procedures considering I have been given her. the education with my assertiveness has been the main serious element in conserving this canine decrease than administration. i'm able to truthfully inform you with out the education I actual have finished (and this is and could constantly be hands ON) she would have thoroughly taken over my homestead. i like American Pit Bull Terriers!

I think they just get a bad rap because of bad owners that train them to fight or attack.
I have 2 dogs - An Australian Shepherd and a Chocolate Lab. I know the sweetest pitbull you'll ever meet - Her name is Daisy and she lives down the street.

I have a pit bull and he is the sweetest dog we have ever had. We got him as a puppy and raised him properly. I think that they get their bad reputation from people who train them to fight and from the ignorant people who say bad things about them. Our pit would rather slobber someone than bite them.
