I try and try, and have yet to open a can with one. am I doing it right? I poke a hole with the end of the CO and from there try slicing it open going around the lid with the CO.

Generally the can opener on a pocket knife has a curved blade and curved indent. At the bottom of that curved indent is a squared off protrusion. That protrusion goes outside the rim of the can while the blade goes to the inside. Hook the protrusion under the lip of the can to provide purchase and leverage and pry downward with the blade portion into the can lid. Move the knife's can opener blade up to the far end of the cut you just made and repeat the process until the entire lid of the can is removed. Works like a charm once you get the tecnique down. It is really very, very simple and does not require brute strength - just technique.

First, make sure you didn't confuse a bottle opener with the can opener. Can openers often look like sharp-edged hooks. Then your technique is correct - you puncture the metal and keep cutting in a sawing motion. Requires a bit of strength but almost always works. And yes, I can cut 1/2" at a tiime, if the can opener is made of good steel and is sharp.

It can be done, however it is not an easy proposition, you have to poke then take very small nibbles around the can, not try to cut 1/2" at a time.

That should work, it will move up and down from perpendicular to parallel along the side of the can. You shouldn't move it up and down from the top of the can, merely move it to the new location to cut again, more of a prying/slicing motion when it is moved from perpendicular to parallel.
