STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. So HIV is an STI

The other posters are wrong, as usual. STI does mean a sexually transmitted infection, which is HIV. The HIV infects you, but is not the actual disease. AIDS is the STD, or sexually transmitted disease, and full blown AIDS in an HIV infected person can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 15 years to develop. So, STI=HIV, STD=AIDS.

STI - Sexually Transmitted Infection
STD - Sexually Transmitted Disease

Both mean basically the same thing. HIV is both as these as it is transmitted during sex.
