How does God talk to you? One of my friends said that God told her not to date during college. That God wanted her to focus on school work. I asked the guy she told this to, how God speaks to him, and he replied that he cries and can't breathe. How is that talking? He then asked me. I said. God never talks to me. He shows me things - brings events and people into my life. So I'm asking - if God talks to you, how does he do it?

Too often, people take their won convictions for God's voice. Or they may come to wise conclusions, with God's help and guidance, but without necessarily having God "talk" to them.
On the other hand, God speaks to me thtough the Bible, through advice of Godly people (I believe He gives me a response in my heat when the advice is of him - but that of course is very subjective).
He also speaks to me through my thoughts and feelings, I believe. Only These subjective ways need to be confirmed.
Take the Apostle Paul. He travelled through what is now modern Turkey. In some way or another God prevented him from entering the provinces of Asia and Bithynia. So he came to Troas - a seeming dead end. Now what would he do? He had a dream in the night of a Macedonian Greek asking for help. The next morning the whole team "concluded together " that God was directing them to cross the Agean sea to go into Macedonia.
So: the conclusion came from common sense (nowhere else to go), a dream, and consultation with his team.
He didn't move only on the basis of his dream.
We need to be very careful when we say "God said". Some young men have told girls: "God has told me we are to be married". Some call that spiritual manipulation.

I commune with God through prayer, but God does not directly speak with human beings, with the exception of Prophets. Unless your friend is a true Prophet of God, he/she did not receive such direct messages.

Sometimes through Bible Study, other times to people I'm close to. Even circumstance throughtout my life I've felt God communicating with me. Sometimes during prayer I will even remain silent and allow my mind to focus on the issue I'm praying about with God's guidance and He will lead me to a solution. The point is God knows best how to communicate to you, your job is simply to listen.

Your friend is nuts. God talks to me by cell phone, of course. I even have a special ring-tone for Him, so I know when he's calling. The guy tends to go on and on though. Geez, what an ego. I'm thinking of getting an unlisted number.

It's to long to explain lol..., I just which you can believed, and have some faith, because of your question you haven't have this awesome experience. Remember this!, have you seeing or hearing anywhere or at any time, that if you see God you can go blind?...., if you try, truly..., and you are able to increase in Faith, you will not go blind...., you will not loose you hearing also, what is best to be or not to be. Exactly like the last part of the question. Whether you know it or not God places things and events for you. Your friend has such a strong faith that she feels that what she needs to do is take care of school. The stronger your faith the more you notice God speaking to you. Trust me he does.

If God's talking to you, that's called schizophrenia.
You could check it but I'm prety sure God told Hitler to kill all the Jews too (I think that was actually Syphillis not schizophenia.)
