The enamel on the back of my daughters front tooth did not develop correctly. Causing her tooth to become easily chipped. The pediatric denstist only wants to cap it as a last resort. we have tried to keep her from chipping them any more but it will soon be to the point where her tooth is going to split.

There are cases where a child's baby tooth needs to be capped. Those who say that it is totally unnecessary and advise to pull the tooth are speaking out of ignorance. They are unaware of the consequences of loosing a baby tooth before it is supposed to come out. Baby teeth that are lost early have been shown to affect the alignment of permanent teeth if the space created by the lost baby tooth is not maintained by a dental appliance. Even so it is best to cap the baby tooth and keep it as long as possible since it is better at maintaining the space than a dental appliance. Plus children tolerate the cap better than an appliance.

Yes, I have capped teeth on kids under 3 years in the operating room. Usually those are the type of kids who had nursing bottle decay (used to go to sleep with a bottle of milk) or from walking around with a sippy cup with juice in it. That can cause teeth to get badly decayed and the only way to restore them is by capping them. Those teeth are very important for varies reasons and I would not advise you to have them pulled if they are restorable. Best wishes.. Pediatric Dentist here

My daughter had to have this done. She had a procedure called a pulpotomy. It is a root canal on a baby tooth so that it isn't lost before it's time and impact the bridge or alignment of the teeth.

Children have 20 baby teeth in total. They begin to lose these around age 5 and lose their last ones around the age of 12. If left untreated with severe cavities they can abscess and cause permanent damage to permanent teeth. Yes, baby teeth can be and routinely are capped.

WHY would you get a baby tooth CAPPED? Any dentist who does this is a complete scam artist. That tooth is going to fall out in a couple of years. If there is a problem with the tooth, the dentist should have just pulled it since no matter what they do, it IS going to fall out.
