Everytime I'm out in public I'm treated with distrust. I don't understand why; I don't look like a scary person and I have good hygene and I wear nice clothes.

Today when I was opening my car door in the student parking lot to get out the woman in the car next to me immediately locked her doors I heard her auto door locks click.

Two years ago at Target when I reached over to grab some paper napkins. The female sitting near there swiftly grabbed her purse and pulled it close to herself.

And a year ago when I was downtown walking down the sidewalk. Another woman parks her car in the alley blocking the sidewalk! She gets out and as soon as she see's me she runs back to her car to make sure it's locked.

Tell me now, why are women so insecure? Is it me, or is it them? It's almost as if they scare themselves to death.

I on the other hand I am always confident when I'm out and about but I've been noticing these things that make women look bad. They don't don't have any confidence.

Yes, a lot of it is paranoia.

Oh and for all the white women esp. who are out there. You should know that I've met some young white men and I wouldn't trust any of them. They talked. I heard stories about this one guy who would break into peoples houses and take their stuff. I would hear other stories about how he was able to ripe some guys off. And they would laugh about their dirty deeds. Now I'm not saying they are all like that. Cause I certainly am not.

So color has NOTHING to do with Character. Two totally different things. Out on the street I don't care what color you are. Everyone is suspect.

I just don't like women who get all paranoid about me out on the street. It hurts my feelings. It kills my day really--such a downer.

No I don't smile. Smiling can be misinterpreted so it's best to have no expression out on the street.

Out in the suburbs though it's a whole different story. In some parts of the country people don't even lock their doors!

That is weird. The same thing happened to me on different occassions and I'm a Black female. This one womam locked her car door as she sat in it when me and my family walked by. Another time this women held on to her purse for dear life as I walked by. I don't get it. I'm a very nice, young, educated person. But you're right. It does make women look bad. If they act scary, they are prime targets.

Many women have been victims of men abducting them, raping them, stealing their purses, etc. It's just easier for us to be cautious than to be trusting. It's nothing against you, personally. I'm sure you're a nice person who would never think to grab a lady's purse or rape her. But a woman who doesn't know you from Adam wouldn't know that. To them, you're a man. That's enough for them to treat you with caution.

Too many women have been abducted, raped and/or killed when they failed to lock their car doors upon seeing a man close to their car. Too many women have had their purses snatched when a man got too close to them in a public place. I know it's not fair that you and other nice men like you must bear this suspicion all because of the actions of the jerks out there. But it's the only way for us to be safe.

Do not confuse caution with insecurity. When we are cautious, we feel secure. We are confident...we are confident that we will not be the next victim on the evening news because we have locked our doors and kept our purses close.

It sounds to me like maybe you're reading too much into this. I personally, as a woman, am very aware of protecting myself. Not necessarily from specific people, but from danger in general. I always lock my car doors when I'm in the car, especially at night. And sometimes I forget and only remember when I see movement outside. Whenever anyone comes too close to me or my purse I draw it just a bit closer. I always make sure my car is locked (mine beeps at me when it's locked, but I've had times that I couldn't remember and I would leave the store and go back to my car to make sure.) I can tell you that this is not about a lack of confidence, it's just a way of being smart. Why would I want to put myself in a position where I could be in danger? It is not confidence that allows people to endanger themselves, it's stupidity.

** Hot Vegas Chic hit the nail on the head as far a I'm concerned. Far too many women are violated in some way and it just makes you more cautious. I've had my purse stolen and a necklace tore off my neck during two totally different situations and types of people. It really makes you more aware!

Do you smile at least? I'd have to respond to these people in some way to make them think they're crazy. A BIG SMILE and hey how are ya? should do. Sorry for your experience, not all women are so paranoid.

I suspect you have the dreaded curse of "The Monobrow"!! (or UniBrow in some parts).

That usually scares the cr@p out of people!

Do you have a swastika tattooed on your forehead?
Some women are just like that. Particularly around young, tall, non-white men. I assume you have some of that going on. But yeah, it's not you, it's them.
