A windmill operates exactly in the same way as a kid's pin-wheel but, on a much larger scale.

The force of the wind acting on angled blades causes the sails to rotate.

The rotation of a full sized windmill is transferred via a shaft and gears to drive other machines such as grain grinding equipment, a water pump in a well for irrigation or domestic purposes.

Wind farms have now been developed using sophisticated windmills to produce electrical power.

The principle of a windmill is used in the operation of steam and gas turbines: - high speed, high power machines generally having multiple bladed rotors for driving generators, large centrifugal pumps, high pressure compressors ... providing up to many thousands of horsepower of energy ... etc.

A fan is a windmill in reverse where the blades are rotated by a motor to move cooling air around a room ... etc.

Do you know how an airplane wing works. It works on what is called the Bernoulli effect. Look at a cross section of an airplane wing. You will notice that the top surface is curved and bottom is relatively flat. This means the air on top travels faster than the air on the bottom. When the air travels faster, there is less pressure at the top. Consequently the air on bottom is slower with more pressure. This difference in pressure causes lift.

The propellers of the windmill are the same. They are attached to an electric motor that generates electricity.

Hope this helps...Leave feedback, I will check back later.

The wind blows the blades which causes them to rotate.
