The Judeo-Christian God is called "He" because Yahweh, the Israelite tribal God from whom He evolved, was a male deity. (There were many Gods and Goddesses worshipped in that part of the world at the time.) The male pronoun has been grandfathered in ever since. ;-)
Personally I believe that the Divine is beyond gender, but human beings, interpreting that fundamentally incomprehensible entity in human terms, usually feel most comfortable relating to the Divine as He or She. And since, in my opinion, the Divine encompasses all energies -- including both male and female polarities -- there's no real reason why the Divine can't be approached as a Goddess, especially if that female energy is what resonates for the individual who's approaching the Divine. That resonance is so powerful that even within Christianity, some people are compelled to refer to the Divine as "She", as people have throughout human history.

God is not a man... where does the Bible say that? The first chapter of Genesis does say:
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Ignore the "his he he" in there, because English has no non-gender-specific pronoun. When the scripture says "he" in this case, there is no specification that the gender of God is actually male. The Hebrew "El" does not imply a gender, and it is unfortunate that English has that limitation.
Especially look at the last part of the above quote from Genesis 1: males and females are both created in the image of God. We both look like God.
Jesus was a man, we obviously know this. God "fathered" Jesus, and in that sense, God is *like* a father, and like a man.
But when God called Eve man's "helper" or "helpmate," the word help is a word that God uses to describe his/her own actions. Psalm 21 says,
I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my *help* come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
If God used a word to describe Eve that also describes God's self, why is it so difficult to say that God is like a woman?
Don't get me wrong. God is not a woman. But God is also not a man. To use "he" is no more or less correct that "she."
People like to think of God as a woman because to limit God to pure masculinity is scary and wierd. God isn't like me? I am not like God? Simply because I am a woman? On the contrary! If I am created in God's image, doesn't she look like me a little?

Man Huh? That's one reason I don't believe. God Is a-sexual, if anything, because the first types of reproduction were a-sexual. Anyway, it is women who create life, not men. The bible clearly states that God is angry, jealous and going to kill the majority of life on Earth out of wrath, so I really don't care what the bible clearly states, I don't believe it is the word of God. Why does God need human sexual organs?
Here is a link to some books that clearly state God is not a man
http://www.librarything.com/work/112299.
The bible has also been translated countless times, effectively changing it's original meaning.
’eheyeh [see also YHVH, Yahweh] means, I will be/become, proper name for God.

The bible was written by men, so it's possible that they assumed that God was a man. I think that some want to say that God is a woman to challenge people to think about why everyone assumes God is a man.
Hope that helps!

Some people just feel more comfortable with a female deity. It's very similar to the way a child feels safer with its mother than with its father. Fathers are traditionally authoritarian, rigid and harsh. Mothers are nurturing, kind and will protect their children, no matter what wrongs they may do. (Perhaps this is why the Virgin Mary was, in a way, deified. God was vengeful but Mary was merciful and would protect her children from their father. With her, people still had a mother goddess.)
Perhaps some people feel that a solely male deity leaves some things unexplained. For instance, if God made man in his own image, in whose image was woman made? And if God is only male, then how can females relate to him? As a female, I must say, it's very unnerving to feel that the one who holds your fate may not understand or love you.

The bible clearly states that he is man? Where does it actually state that God is a male? Because we refer to him as Him? Do ships have vaginas? We refer to them as she and her, don't we?
If there is a God, it would need no sexual identity because it would need no sexual organs because it is probably not a biological life form that has to reproduce. Therefore, it is silly to argue the male/female thing, and the only people that this is important to are people that are obsessed with gender issues in general.

The Bible is clearly a work of fiction and the pointing out that the god-du-jour could be a woman is simply yanking on that particular chain of firmly held paternalistic conception. Our father, who art in heaven. The big daddy. The stern disciplinarian. The authoritarian figure. The daddy I never had, sob, sniffle, boo hoo.

I think people do that to try to get Christians stirred up. We know that God created man in His image and woman was created out of man. So, if God created Adam from His image, then God has all the same parts that Adam does. God created women differently so that we would fit together with man.
