Is there a rule/law the prohibits doctors/surgeons from drinking while on call or in the hospital. I'm not talking about getting drunk, just a light drink.

Drinking in the hospital or practicing on hospital premises while "impaired" may get you suspended or kicked off the medical staff, depending on the bylaws. Medical staff bylaws, rules and regs have become more stringent on this issue in the past several decades.

Drinking while on-call is very unwise. Most docs have the common sense not to drink in such situations. Most of the rest refrain just to avoid a malpractice issue. Unfortunately there are always a few outriders who skirt the borders of proper behavior.

Many hospital medical staffs have an impaired physician committee. If not, there are other staff commitees to address the issue. All hospitals and the doctors on the medical staff have a vested interest in protecting their collective good reputations.

Yes, pretty much the same laws as for airline pilots. There has to be a certain number of hours that pass after you had a drink before you can practice medicine. (or fly a plane)
