i am orthodox. as i have been told the bible does not explain everything. i am pretty sure of that. it is the main guideline. i also know some sources known as the holy fathers/parents (litterary translation, sorry), people that have added to the substance of religion, mostly christianity. besides this, the bible has not been aroud since adam and eve and so people had to save their souls by other means. correct me if i'm wrong. many people on this site and without wanting to offend anyone, protestants i suppose, treat it as the only source of knowledge. are they wrong? if not how do they explain facts not treated in the bible? please do not offend other faiths by answering. i'm looking for pows.

Nope. You and I totally agree here. Scripture, Tradition and Reason - in equal amounts. "Sola Scriptura" was never a part of the Church's teaching until the late 14th century.

The Bible was not meant to be the ultimate textbook for everything you ever needed to know. As far as explaining religion goes, the Bible is certainly enough. There are many sources outside the Bible that confirm what we read in scripture (although the Bible is more than sufficient on it's own).

1. Geography
2. Texts
3. Toponymy
4. Archaeology

Geography- If you study the geography of Israel you would see how it affected the settlement patterns, routes of travel commerce, econmy, politics and thus the history of that time. The geography of the Biblical Israel confirms what we read in the Bible.

Texts- There are extra-biblical texts (texts outside the Bible) that also confirm what is written in scripture. Egyptian sources are primarily from the 2nd millenium BCE. There are 4 types.
1) Expedition journal and topographical lists- example is Thutmose III.
2) Literary papyri-example, Journey of Sinuhe
3) Execration texts- 2 sets (ursing)
4) Coorespondance archives- El Amarna letters
Other Extra Biblical texts include Mesopotamian sources, from Syria the Ebla texts, from Transjordan the Mesha Stele, from Israel the Tel Dan inscription.
Also look at authors like the famous historian Josephus, Tacitus, Pliny the younger, Julius Africanus, and the Talmud.

Toponymy- the study of place names. If you study the cities and other names in the Bible you will see that they have the Principles of Location which prove they really did exist. Those are:
1) Near a water source.
2) Defensible.
3) Continuity of the name through the centuries.
4) It fits with the geography described in the text.
5) Check data from archaelogical surveys.
No one would settle in a place that did not have these Principles of Location.

Archaeology- If we dig in Israel and find ancient sites that are consistent with where the Bible said we would find them, that shows the Bible's history and geography are accurate. One prominate archaeologist carefully examined Luke's references to 32 countries, 54 cities, and 9 islands, finding not a single mistake. These are only some sites that have been excavated: The Pool of Bethesda in John 5:1-15, the Pool of Siloam from John 9:7, Jacob's well from John 4:12, even Pontius Pilate's identity has been confirmed by archaeology! John McRay PH. D. was asked if he had ever encountered an archaeological finding that blatantly contravene a New Testament reference he responded, "Archaeology has not produced anything that is unequivocally a contradiction to the Bible. On the contrary, there have been many opinions of skeptical scholars that have become codified into 'fact' over the years but that archaeology has shown to be wrong."

Jane: you'd better read Luke 16:19-31. First of all, it was a parable. Second, you mean Abraham not Moses. Third, Abraham was not in any realm of hell.

Is the Bible enough? Of course not. Just like the many books that you read in the school. Knowledge of those will never be enough unless you put all of what you learned into practice. Chances in your work or in your everyday life, there are things that you learned to do either easier or harder than what the books says. As you may know a lot about God or your responsiblity to God based on the Book, you will find that doing what God wants is not that easy for many even if the priest or preacher seem to carry their vocation with ease and joy. You need to experience life and what is it about being righteous in your ways. The Holy Book gives you the experiences of it heroes and villains and knowledge that you have to exert extra effort to understand each learning. Oftentimes, the Book and the preachers shall only show you the whats whens and whys in life but the hows are yours to do even if there are steps to follow. Sometimes in the music of life, your steps will vary according to the tune and tempo and those tunes and tempo are not always the same. It is always the like advancing stages of life. The fast dance we are now experiencing maybe too fast for the elders and they may not cope up. It may seem easy for you if you are young and able but sometimes you may stumble too or step on someone's toe and sometimes someone may step on your toes but with learning from the Book you may be guided to move on even if it hurts. It will only be enough if you learn to understand every wisdom you get.

The Bible does not explain everything, some things about God are a mystery. It is the story of Gods love for His people. He gave us His laws to show us what sin is. When His people failed to keep His laws, God gave them the Messiah to pay for their sin. Christ was the last sacrifice and his blood atoned for our sin. Read the New Testament the book of Romans. In Romans 9:30-33 Paul (formerly Saul) explains that Israel (the Jews) did not pursue righteousness by faith, but by works. Their stumbling block was Jesus, because they tried to earn their own salvation instead of accepting that Jesus act on the cross was for our sin. Jesus paid for sin and that is the way to be righteous, not through works. Romans 10:04 "Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes". After accepting Christ we are to go and be light unto the world, so we do not stop trying to obey God, not at all. The only way God can see us as righteous is through Christ. Keep reading the Bible! I have been studying it all my life!

"Enough" for what? And which "Bible"? Surely you know there are dozens of Bibles. Even the one commonly called "the" Bible in our culture is not unique; the Judaic, Catholic and Protestant ones differ, and even the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Exclusive Brethren each have their own versions.

Choose your Bible:

The Torah
The Upanishads
The Holy Qu'ran
Science and Health
Dianetics
The Torah plus the Writings and the New Testament
The Tibetan Book of the Dead
The Bhagavad Gita
The Book of Mormon
...
the list goes on and on.
.
Oh, you mean only the one you were raised to consider "the" sacred holy word and all the others are phony? Yeah, sure they are. Only ONE can be the inspired Holy Word of God *yawn*.

properly over 30,000 competing non Catholic ideals all attempting to persuade the different they comprehend the Bible greater valuable than them, and claiming the comparable Holy spirit classes them. That on my own could answer your question. however the Traditions of the Church got here in the previous the written word, and without custom to fall back on for help, the Bishops in 397 whilst accumulating the thousands of letters written all proclaiming to be actual coaching,it would have been a almost impossible activity to ascertain even via the holy spirit to have been in a position to comprehend the variations. via the way the e book of Revelation in trouble-free terms a sprint made it into the Bible via i think it grew to become into via a million vote.

It is true that the Bible does not treat every single last subject that exists.
Why?
Because the Bible HAS a theme ....and it sticks to theme.
BTW The Bible has been around since Adam.
Why do you suppose Genesis 5:1 says
"This is the book of Adam’s history. . . ."
Genesis 11:10 says " This is the history of Shem.. . .'
They kept records and Moses used them as a start of the Bible.
Toward the end of the Bible producing period, Paul wrote Timothy:
"All Scripture is beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be FULLY competent, COMPLETELY equipped...."

Protestants do not believe that the Bible is the only source of knowledge; just that it is the only source that is guaranteed to have been completely inspired by God.

The Bible is referred to as the "cannon" (a.k.a: the "measure") because it is the measure of all truth. Since God would not contradict himself, then anything that blantantly contradicts the Bible cannot be from God.

Makes sense? Hope that helps.

Let me try to express it this way; Jesus is to be First in our lives. The Bible is God's word. It is not a calculus book, a history book (although it does have 'history' in it), a science book (although it does have 'science' in it), etc.
As for some people think it is the 'only' thing one should read; that may be a matter also of sloppy grammer by them, and growth too.
