what can a small church, that is NON JUDGEMENTAL, Loving, and involved in the community do to dispell that notion. I am saddened and embarassed to be lumped in with these people that use their "faith" as a platform to judge and demean different groups of people. I want to know why the quiet, helpful, christians who are involved in their communities and trying to make the world a better place are ignored.

One thing you can do is make posts like that.

The raidcal fundamentalists get a lot of press and ink because they are loud and obnoxious. Their tactics invite the camera. I think your Church can loudly oppose their beliefs.

Thank you, from an agnostic Jewish liberal who really appreciated what you wrote.

Because for whatever reason they may have, a lot of people want to see the bad in Christianity. They zero in on the fanatics and backsliders, rather than look at the good that Christians do.

The church that I belonged to before we moved consisted of about 75 families, and none of us were rich, by any means. That quiet little Catholic church raised over $20,000 for medicine, food, clothing, and building supplies for our sister church in El Salvador. That was in addition to helping with the local soup kitchen, food bank, clothing drives, and other charitable causes in the community.

To me, that was the love of Christ in action. But because quiet churches serve in quiet ways, they'll never get the notice that the scandal-mongering ones do.

The only comfort is that God knows His own -- the ones who love Him by caring for others in need.

Amen--and I can't give you a definate answer--I'm not predsumptious to claim to know the mind of God!

But here's a couple of thoughts. Firrst, remember that God is the only one you have to answer to--and He will be mindful of your faith and the extent of your efforts to help others. One of the biggest tests of real faith is simply doing what you can do--each day--and trusting him: "all things work together for thos who love God and are called according to His purpose."

But (stepping into my secular role as a social scientist) I can give you a brief answer from a sociologicalperspective. The kind of "Christians" you speak of--the extreme right-wing, mostly--have spend decades of work on making it appear they are the core of Christanity in this country (they are not)--and have an avowed policy of both dominating the "public sphere" and public discourse--and until recently have done a very good job of achieving that goal. In the process, however, they have lost the focus on Christian teaching and living--and have substituted a political ideology for the teachings of Christ.

But don't worry too much about all the noise they make. You can be very sure they are right about one thing--God is indeed listening to them. Personally, if I wer one of these hateful "Christians" that thought would scare the h**l out of me! :)

well, you're right, there is no need for Christians to go around demeaning people and attacking them. However, don't forget that the Apostle Paul traveled the world spreading the Gospel to people who were of different beliefs, and he probably offended most of them. However, it was necessary to the faith.

thank you for trying to be like Christ. don't let the other Christians frustrate you, and always remember that the Bible says to be ready always to give an answer to those who question your reason for hope.

The same reason the quiet, helpful atheists are ignored, because everybody just wants to start a controversy some how, just wanting attention. but the ones who dont do this are ignored. I am a Christian by the way

Ignorant means uneducated.

What makes me think that is the number of uninformed questions that are asked in this very forum about scientific issues such as evolution. Many of these are asked nicely and with good intentions but they are so out of line I can't believe the person got through eight grade science.

They are not ignored they are by nature not as vocal. When this country (U.S.) fused church and state it gave politicians another wepon to use to create an us v them mentality. Those that bought into that garbage are the vocal ones who have lost the foundation of their faith and put their trust in politics to legislate. Whne this happens all Hell breaks loose.

The voice of reason and compassion is always drowned out by the fanatical cries of the zealot. Sad but true, people who just want to live and love and believe in peace will always have to contend with the angry, self-righteous blowhards of this world. But if you do truly believe in God, your reward is waiting beyond this world of hate & sin & greed & corruption. If you don't believe in God, it's up to you to make this world a better place than you find it.

Because sadly, the fanatics of all creeds get all the press. The moderates of all creeds always get drowned
out.

Keep up the good work!
