Sometimes smaller banks will have a little more leniency to work with you. Most banks will run you through to check as they are Federally regulated. It shows compliance if an account was to go bad at a later date.

Hello, if you are in the US all banks use a system (as of 2003) called Chex Systems. Here's what this system shows. It will bring up a record of every bank you were with (or are with) that you owe money to, even if you have disputed some charge with them like an overdraft fee or bounced checks and have not paid them, it will show up and the new bank is, by law, supposed to give you a form explaining the adverse action so you can go back to that bank and settle the issue. If the new bank rep. just says you were denied they are not complying with the law. When I was the one advising customers at the bank I worked at I would also tell them that even though you may have paid the debt, the bank might not take the next step and submit the info to Chex Systems. So if this what is happening to you, keep your payment receipts as proof and get a manager and ask them to take the proper steps to clear your account, report it to Chex Systems and get something in writing from them about this action if you can. If your situation is stickier than this you can e-mail me and we can work on it together. I know it is an aggrevation, but everything is fixable! My best to you.

Is there anyway that you can go and pay the debt that you owe?
I know that this sucks if the fees were not your fault but, if you pay it now, you can save the money in all the other fees you would be paying by cashing your checks at the check cashing stores so think of it as saving yourself money in the long run.
Those check cashing places charge (lets say) $8.00 every time you cash your paycheck. If you get paid 52 weeks each year , look at all the money you are saving by paying your debt and going back to using the bank!

To keep you from getting into trouble again, consider not using checks at all and banking online that way you can see what your account balance is before you even leave your house
Best of luck to you

I got an account with citibank, I was in your same situation. They wont let you write checks, only use a debit card, but it is a start to a good banking relationship

Woodforest National Bank in Walmart has a second chance checking account. They charge $5.95 a month for this account, but their customer service is great. They don't treat you any differently then customers with regular checking accounts. They really do give you a second chance.

Try a credit union.

Banks make their money on risk. One way they determine risk is through a credit check.
