An answer that you don't like is still an answer.

And I have gotten answers.

Many.

Prayer is something that is only effective for those who have the faith to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. The Bible says the only way to the Father is through the Son. The person on here who said "prayer is for lazy jerks" does not (at least at this point in his life) posess that kind of faith. But the Bible does say some very key things about prayer:

Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.

The question is not why to keep on praying. The question is why do you feel like you're not getting answers? The Bible also says "God's ways are higher than our ways". This is a very powerful statement, because in that one statement alone, one can deduct that God knows whether we need something or not, and he always provides for our NEEDS (not to be confused with wants). But he also does it in HIS time, not ours.

Sometimes it's not always obvious when God has answered our prayers, and sometimes it's blatantly obvious. The important thing is that we strive to live a righteous life and continue to pray, and in time, we get our answers.

You always get an answer. It may not come to you right away, but when you pray, you always are left with an answer. Even if you don't see it, it's there. I can feel God all around me. He's with us all. Some of the things you pray about, he may not be able to give you. Doesn't mean that he's not listening. Doesn't mean that he doesn't want to give it to you. He just can't. Prayer does work. You do get answers. You just need to look harder to find them.

And as other people have said; God does give you answers. You may not like them, but He does give them to you.

That's what I asked myself one day, after my mother had told me for the thousandth time, all about how her prayers get answered, sometimes with "no" (nothing happened), sometimes with "maybe" (nothing happened), sometimes with "the timing isn't good so not yet" (nothing happened), sometimes with "your request is too trivial for an important god like me to deal with" (nothing happened), sometimes with "you don't really know what's good for you but will understand later why you didn't get what you're praying for" (nothing happened)...I'm amazed she was able to keep track of all the justifications, really. Of course, every so often, things would coincidentally work out the way she'd hoped, and that would be the "answer to her prayers".

it's psychological. It's like positive reinforcement. You pray and pray and let's say you get what appears to be the answer to your prayers, so you keep on praying hoping that you'll get another answer. It's odds, like gambling...you get addicted thinking you got an ace up your sleeve with prayer...but you don't...truth is think about all your prayers that have gone unanswered and I'm sure they far out number the "answered prayers"
It's behaviorism. Not superstition.
Kill you GOD
-Amen

Prayer is completing the living relationship I have with God.

If I stop praying then It's like when I stop calling my best friends ... they're there, they still love me, but that connection/ bond is gone.

Prayers can be formal, giving thanks, whining, asking for stuff, and listening (Reading Bible, Listening to Homilies, & other stuff). In fact, my friendships here on earth in my community seem to get stronger when I pray, 'cas I can then treat my buddies like I do God (without the perpetual adoration of course) and they are instantly attracted to the genuine friendship I give them and take back from them.

In short, God teaches me how to treat myself and others by the practice of the differt prayers --- how to balance the prayer types --- and what to expect.

I've had many responses to my prayers.. True faith in Christ and an acceptance that you will not get everything you ask for is important. Ive had many things given to me when it seemed impossible at the time. For example I was stuck in a horrible Bedsit for 4 years and I asked Mary mother of Jesus to help me find a nice new home and within 6 months I got the resources and bought and moved into a new 2 bedroom apartment. Im still here after 9 years. I donated regularly then to the collection for my church who were raiseing money to replace the Church roof. My attitude was that God put a roof over my head so it was the least I could do by helping him to put a roof over His Church..

Keep in mind, the prophet elisha (or Elijah) prayed for rain several times. Also, sometimes the answer is basically, Yes, but not right now!!!

Keep on praying!!! (Do not quit).

But I do get answers. I was taught that when you ask God for something, you get one of three answers: 1)Yes; 2)Not yet; or 3)No, I have something better for you.

We have to develop a discerning eye (through closeness to God) to see answered prayer. It's not always what we think it will be.

Well, I really ccouldn't tell you--because when i pray, i usually get an answer! But you have to be alert--God has a habit of being subtle and indirect--as a general rule He "whispers"--and its usually a REALLY bad idea to annoy Him into shouting! :)

That's what I kept asking myself until I became an Atheist. I kept praying to god that he give me the power to make peoples heads explode. Nothing ever happened.
