I've prayed many desperation prayers and had them answered within moments. When my husband and I were in college, we made church mice look downright wealthy -- I mean we were so broke that the year we broke poverty level, we thought we were the richest people on earth.
There were plenty of times when I'd have more month than money, and I'd send up a prayer for help to buy groceries. I kid you not -- usually within an hour or less, I'd find a five or ten dollar bill on the ground. Enough to meet the need and get us through until payday.
After graduation, I think I've found money twice in the past thirty years and not for lack of looking, either. I just figure God is helping the new generations of desperate college kids. :-)

It's not really like magic. I have asked Him for things that never happened. God is a Person who responds in His own way. However I remmember asking Him for $20 (back in the 60's), and a cheque for that amount came in the mail the next morning from a totally unexpected source. Then in the 80's, my family was down to the last plate of beans, and the next morning a cheque from another totally unexpected source came - for $100.
I prayed for a man who was given, at most, 6 hours to live. God chose to restore him. The nurse who was sitting by him waiting for him to die was totally stunned. The surgeons said it could only have been divine intervention.
But I prayed for my brother who had cancer, and God took him.
Prayer is not like a light switch that you can turn on at will. Neither is there a magic formula for prayer.
EDIT:
I was forgetting - the following is not my prayer, but concerned me. I had mentioned to a friend that I wake up regularly at night with severe pain. Before we parted, she prayed that that night God would wake me up to talk with Him, but not with pain. That night I woke up and just drifted into prayer. But it wasn't pain that woke me up. In the morning I remembered my friend's prayer. That was just a few days ago.

All the time. I have a reputation for getting parking spaces. Even priest ask 'what is the prayer that she uses?'. Like magic! What is really amazing is finding lost objects. I use to pray, but now I know it is just my subconscious mind so I just ask my subconscious to find it and wait a couple of minutes and in a sort of trance I just go to the place and bingo, there it is. Every time. EVERY time.

Not so often for me, however, I have two short stories.
I have this flaky friend who prays at the drop of a hat. when she loses her keys, when she gets cut off in traffic, just weird little stuff like that. What's crazy is that she does get what she prays for... It cracks me up
also, there is this tottaly creepy and ultra religious man that works with me. I can't stand the people that act like they have a closer relationship with god than everyone else, but he told me this nutty story about how his daughter was covered in warts head to toe, and he and his wife prayed and "laid hands on her" and they all fell off overnight. I could hardly keep a straight face, but whatever, man

I believe God gives me whatever I ask for as long as it's not materialistic. Whether or not I chose to seize the moment is a different story though. Watch, I will ask the Lord to send me a nice woman today, I pretty positive sparks will fly soon.

My son fell of the couch the other day and my 4 yr old daughter asked if we could pray for him because she saw his pain and we prayed and within seconds he stopped crying and everything was well THAT WAS GOD ANSWERING our prayer and not magic. That was the power of God.

God doesn't always work that fast. He knows the plans He has for us and He knows what is best. Some of the greatest gifts is un-answered prayers.....
But I know I have been really sick before and have the pastor pray for me and I get better immediately...it has also happened for my son an several occasions...

It's called the law of attraction, and it really has nothing to do with religion, yet people who pray and truly beleive they will receive experience it all the time, because that is how the law of attraction works. Its a universal law just like gravity, you can beleive in it or not, but we are all experiencing it all the time.
