Tears stains around the eyes (or mineral stains around the mouth) are caused by an over-abundance of red yeast being produced in your dog's system. Generally, over-the-counter cosmetic cleaners will not help much, if at all. This is a problem that needs to be cleared from the inside out. First step is to read the label on your dog's bag of food (if you feed commercial kibble or canned diet, that is). Is there red beet pulp in it? If there is, that could be a culprit. That ingredient increases the amount of red yeast in your dog's system, which will lead to more staining.

There are products out there that do work, though they're not applied topically. One is called Angel Glow, which is a supplement to your dog's food that reduces that yeast content in the system. Over some time, it will clear up amazingly! Talk to your vet about it first, though. Angel Glow contains a low-dose antibiotic that may not be suitable for use on dogs with compromised immune systems from certain diseases, or dogs that are too old or too young since their immune systems will not be at full-strength.

If there are stains around your dog's mouth, that is most likely from the same cause I stated above, PLUS the mineral content in your dog's water. Simply switch your dog to spring water and it will clear that up.

Good luck!

The best product is Diamond eye. You can get it at the pet store or from a groomer who sells products too- it's what most dog show people use. We used it on a white peke we showed-the salt from the tears causes the stain. You can also get it online -just type it in it should come up-good luck-mellie

There is a special cleaner you can get at the pet store to remove the red stains - It's located in the same isle as the shampoos and other grooming supplies.
