I don't know what your budget is, but the Hilton Garden Inn in Arlington is really nice. http://www.hiltongardeninn.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=DCAARGI
I lived in DC 2 summers ago for a college program... my parents stayed here when they dropped me off and when they visited the weekend of the 4th of July.
It's in a really nice place (both in the hotel and the surrounding area) with a movie theater and some restaurants and small stores just up the road on the left.
It's safe and a lot less expensive than staying in DC. Also, the metro (the subway system) has a stop where the movie theater and stuff is, so you can take a train into the city instead of spending hours driving around and getting lost.

Interesting note, and this isn't meant to deter you, because it really is safe... the week after the 4th of July when my parents visited for the 2nd time and we stayed in the hotel for the 2nd time, my school class went to see a jail. we came out of the subway and i realized it was the same place I had just stayed with my parents! The prison and the court house are just up the street from the hotel!

But anyway, it really is a nice place with places to eat nearby and you can easily get to DC for just a couple of dollars each way by hopping on the Metro. I really do recommend it.

Obviously there are millions of choices for lodging in DC....I would definitely recommend the Arlington area of Virginia. I don't know anthing about you or your group...however I would definitely recommend staying in Virginia as the prices will be a tad cheaper...you will have great Metro access...safety will be high...and you'll still be in the middle of everything!
I lived in Arlington Courthouse for a while right across the street from my apartment was a Courtyard by Marriott and the Courthouse Metro Station...in Courthouse there are bars, restaurants, and a quick walk or even metro ride if it's too cold--to great shops and restaurants in Clarendon. You could also go to Rosslyn (also in Arlington directly across the Potomac from Georgetown). Rosslyn has plenty of hotels and a few cool restaurants...and of course very easy Metro access.

Just recently I stayed in the Dunn Loring Courtyard by Marriott and it was awesome! Brand new when I stayed in December...it was a great room, great everything...and directly across the street from the Metro.

If you prefer there is Alexandria (Old Towne) where you can stay close to the Metro...and Old Town is a nice time also--just a bit longer metro ride into the District than the Arlington locations.

Okay, all in all...look around the Virginia side of DC preferably around Arlington...hope that helps...

There's an affordable and pleasant Econolodge near the East Falls Church metro station on the orange line in Arlington. A bike path/hiking trail connects the hotel directly with the metro station. If you're driving, the motel is easy to get to from I-66, and if you fly you can take the metro from Reagan/National Airport. The neighborhood is quite safe, and from there it's about half an hour on the train to downtown.

HI,

the metro (subway) is really great in DC - and it goes to outlying communities. Look up the metro and cross index the arrdess with Orbitz hotels in your price range - takes a little time but can find better deals.

You can find a nice place there and ride in - an all week pass is 22$.

You have a BIG group - 2 doubles and a sleeper; I like the

Marriott Residence inn at Pentagon City - it is 2 block walk to stores/resturants and the metro station - they have a shuttle form metro to hotel. Not sure of your price but really nice place.

Good areas include:
Bethesda and Chevy Chase (Maryland)
Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church (Virginia)
Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle, Northwest (DC)
Try to find places that are within walking distance of the metro.
Here's a good site for affordable accommodations:

I actually have a pal that lives in Maryland, on the fringe of DC and he says that that is easily highly risky, exceptionally for a lady through herself. you need to have solid street smarts there, exceptionally in the no longer-so-solid neighborhoods. He says that almost anybody there has seen a useless body and that rape is definitely highly substantial and likewise that there are dissimilar creeps that haven't any experience of non-public area. that is about average, cost smart. Jobs are substantial. they don't look to be hit so undesirable with the interest disaster, exceptionally because it is a metropolitan area and dissimilar authorities homes are there and fort Meade is interior of sight. i do not study the evening existence yet in my view, DC will be close to the bottom of my record of places to stay. There are little wallet of secure neighborhoods yet i do not in my view understand sufficient to point one.
