I am traveling in late March/early April and will have already been to Christchurch, Queenstown and TeAnau areas. Looking for the best way to get back from Queenstown to Christchurch. Trying to decide if we go South East and up to Christchurch or North West and back to Christchurch.

I live in Dunedin but I would have to say that you would fine Wanaka and the West Coast far more interesting. Wanaka is beautiful, the lake is great, a bit cold though. The West Coast is nice too.

Although Dunedin has the Cadbury factory, Speight's Factory, Larnach's castle, Yellow Eyed Penguins, etc etc. It all depends on what you want too see!

I'd go through Wanaka, Haast, up the West Coast and across Arthurs Pass. There's Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World in Wanaka, Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, the West Coast lakes, Hokitika museum (be sure to see the Stan Graham exhibits), and the glow worm caves at Arahura. Alternatively the Southern Scenic Route from Balclutha to Te Anau is good if you've got time. Google 101 must-dos for kiwis. If you go through Dunedin be sure to call in at Aramoana.

They're both really nice routes, so I think it does have to come down to what you want to see. The west coast obviously has the advantage of the glaciers etc, while the southern route is great if you want to see the wildlife etc on the Otago peninsula near Dunedin. I'd probably opt for the latter myself, but I'm sure you'll enjoy either route.

Go to Lake Wanaka, then go up the West Coast to the Punaki Rocks, up to Westport. Beautiful trip. Stop and see the glaciers.
