Given the words of Jesus in Matthew, how can you be divorced and still consider yourself a Christian?

8and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

10When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

Matthew 10:8-12 NIV

Zombie, I'm one of those atheists who uses double standards held by Christianity to point out how wrong it is to persecute homosexuals. Notice how Christians accept divorcees, but outright shun gays. This is called hypocrisy.

And timmeresque, Jesus says let not man divide what God has joined. This indicates that any divorce is wrong, not just if you remarry, which I'm not sure how you could remarry if marriage is a sacred rite and God says divorce is wrong.

Thats another bigottedly edited verse in the bible.

Too much tampering by man.

Divorce is a human right.

And I doubt Jesus actually said that.

Moses said it was OK to divorce. So why do Moses and Jesus not jibe? Also, there is a loophole in Christ's words above--if someone cheated in the relationship (adultery) then divorce is justified. Otherwise, no. Sorry. However, ultimately you can still be a christian if you repent. You can basically do anything (except speaking ill of/blashpeming the Holy Spirit) and if you repent, you will be saved.

In my case, it wasn't my idea, and where I live, there is a no-fault divorce law. And, in my case, I am remaining celibate until I either reconcile with my ex, or I die, or Jesus returns. Either way, I'm cool with that.

However, within the passage you mentioned, there is a biblical reason for divorce. Adultery. You can be a Christian and divorce your spouse.

There is another marriage exception. If an unbelieving spouse leaves the believer, the believer is free. (I Corinthians 7:12ff)

Well either alot of people aren't true Christians, or the Bible can no longer be taken literally because times have changed so much. There are many things people do nowadays that are considered sins by the bible but they still call themselves Christians. Again, the question is whether or not these people are indeed Christians or should the bible no longer be taken as literally. I'm not sure which is correct myself. Guess I'll find out when I die then.

key word is AND "divorces his wife and marries another woman "

that's how you sin. I don't know if it makes you not a Christian (who is able to stop sinning once they become a Christian.)

It just makes you a sinner like the rest of us who are saved by grace. I think that we should all seek not to sin if possible. If you know that you are sinning then you probably should try not to if possible.

There are biblical reasons for divorce.

As for the other reasons for divorce, Christians are not perfect. Only Jesus is perfect. We make mistakes of all kinds. There are Christians who have committed all types of sins: divorce, theft, lies, obesity, abortion and murder, rape and molestation, etc. Jesus died for our sins so that we could become Christians.

Are you one of those people who believes even the most doomed relationships should continue on, making both parties miserable for the rest of their lives just to abide by the words of some guys who died 2,000 years ago?

Speaking on a religious level for the sake of argument, your position seems to be that one cannot sin at all and still be a Christian. Sets the bar pretty high, don't you think?

How about stepping out of the Dark ages. No one should be forced to stay in an intolerable marriage
