I have a kitten Pete aka "petey" a siamese cabit ever since we got him he has been the light of my life. But my poor petey can't seem to meow, he is almost 4 months old and had never meowed once he tries opens his mouth and looks like he is but nothing comes out, I can hear him purr alot but never anything else with that it is hard for me to tell if he needs anything unless he is in my face and I see his mouth open, what could be wrong? I am taking him to the vet to get neutered soon and get his shots, but was wondering if there is anything else I can do for him at home until I get him to the doctors, or if this is not at all that uncommon?

my sister also thought maybe he could be a mute? but he sure does hear that can of tuna&salmon when I am tapping it with a fork for dinner or when I whisper something about a treat....LOL
But seriously would he be able to hear lf he's a mute though?

Thank you all so far that have put me at ease about my baby boy......I can tell it is going to be hard to pick the best answer when this is done, And Sherry I laughed when I read your answer because petey dont have a tail he hops like a rabbit and has a rabbit tail.....lol So the chances of his tail getting caught in the door are (none).
and based on what you are all telling me so far I guess he is a mute....... poor petey I want him to talk to me :-( Thanks keep the answers coming.......

My cat didn't meow until she was about 6 months old. Even now, at age 4, her meow is similar to that of a small kitten. It seems my cats who are indoor cats retain a kittenish level to their voices as they do not need to develop a large vocal range for communication beyond "pick me up" and "can I come into bed with you" ;) Don't fret about it. Mention your concerns to the vet at his appointment but as long as he is eating, drinking and has a good energy level enjoy all the fun he brings!

He can certainly be mute without being deaf. Some cats seem to be mute for a long time, but them something happens like they get their tail caught in a door or something else that hurts and all of a sudden they have a voice! From what you are describing though he appears to be mute.

Awwwwwww, he sounds like a sweet little kitten, but he's probably just mute like some humans, luckily its a lot easier to get on with life as a mute cat than it is a human lol

There's nothing you can do for Petey. There's also nothing wrong with him. Simply, he just lacks the ability to meow. I have a cat who can't meow either. When he tries to, it sounds almost as if he had just coughed!

Hope I eased your worrying about Pete. =)

alot of siamese and persian kittens and cats dont have a voice, it is a long trait that comes from extensive inbreeding and usually a flat face in the case of the persians. they dont have much of a voice box. purring comes from a totally different set of *noise makers* in the throat other than the voice box itself.

He is probably mute, just like some humans are sometimes.
