Hi I just picked up Rocco (my 7 week old pup) on Saturday. We have him sleeping by himself. The problem is that he is whining (usually an hour before I have to wake up for work lol). It's been awhile since I've had a puppy. How long is this going to last?

Depends on WHY he's whining. Most new puppies go through a phase of whining/crying/whimpering for at least the first few days when in a new home (there are exceptions, but generally speaking, most do). It can last a day or two, or a week. Depends on how long your puppy needs to adjust to its new environment.
However, if it's something other than simply adjustment, it could last much longer if you don't get it fixed quick. I'd see your vet about it, just to rule out any medical issues.

Puppies can't hold it in like adult dogs can. He's whining probably because he needs to go poo and pee. Make sure you take him out before you go to bed. If your puppy doesn't whine through the night, you're pretty lucky! Because my pup whined for about a week the entire length of the night because he was afraid to be alone. But if that's not a problem for you, I'm sure that your pup will get used to your schedule as he grows up. But in the mean time, its usually hard for pups that young to hold it in for over 8 hours.

If he's whining first thing in the morning, it's usually because he has to go potty and wants someone to come get him.

Putting him on a regular feeding schedule (and no water after 4:00 pm) will help get his bowels and bladder on schedule and make it easier for him to sleep through the night without problems.

Also, if he's this new to you it will take him about a week to get used to your in-house schedule. Give him a little time.

A toy dog should stay at the breeder until 12 weeks
A bigger dog, should stay for eight weeks
You may have to put it up for longer, since you took the puppy so early
Last year, when I looked into getting a toy breed, I brought
Toy Dog magazine
Then a book about silky terriers
Good luck
