Probably at least 5000 although many have been lost in the last 200 years while new languages have developed. About a thousand of the world's languages are on the island of New Guinea

Estimates will vary quite a bit. Wikipedia cites a source giving 7330.
The fact that you can't always tell where a dialect stops being a dialect and starts being a separate language makes the number debateable.

i speak another language which is CHALDEAN everyone tells me that they never heard of that and they think that ma family probably has created it but thats not true its the language that jesus used to speak which is pretty old and obviously the original language.
