Yes it could be, but unlikely. My mom is alergic to the same and I am not. But things such as that are hereditary. If you didn't have any side effects from it before I wouldn't be worried about taking it.

It is possible to genetically pass down an allergy such as your mom's. I would ask her what specifically happens when she takes codeine; does she break out in hives, have trouble breathing, etc.? This will give you a better indication of how you will be able to determine any signs of an allergy for yourself. Your symptoms will more than likely mimic hers if you are allergic, so if you take the medication and don't notice any side effects you probably don't have an allergy [to it].

Interestingly enough, I know a little about this because my father does not have codeine receptors, so it has little to no effect on him and cannot be used for pain relief, which is its common use by hospitals and doctors. I had my gall bladder removed several years ago and was given codeine in the hospital for pain relief, and it was instantly apparent that I had inherited his genetics because I felt like I had just come out of surgery with no pain killers at all! They ended up having to give me Demerol for pain instead.

It is not uncommon for medication allergies to be passed on, but be aware that just because your mom has an allergy to a specific medication does not always mean you do too. My daughter also recently had to take Sulfa as an antibiotic, and we were warned to watch for a reaction because my husband has a sulfa/bactrum allergy. It turns out that my daughter does not have a problem with sulfur and did not inherit her father's allergy. Good luck to you and hope this helps!

Yes just in the same way as tendency to Asthma is often genetically past on so can any allergy be.There is certainly an increased likelihood of you being susceptible but not necessarily to the point of 'high risk'.
Just determine how your mother has reacted to it first. When you say she has an allergic reaction to it -what exactly?
If it's only a mild rash or temporary nauseas then chances are yours-if you have it- would not be any more pronounced. If on the other hand her reaction is far more serious than ask for an alternative to Codeine-just to be on the safe side

It's possible to become allergic to it also but if you've never had it before, you shouldn't develop an allergy to it immediately. Most allergies that are hereditary are due to environmental allergens, not medicinal.
codeine allergy is usually developed after using it for a while.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you start having symptoms of an allergy to it after using. The symptoms are rarely life threatening.

I believe it is possible, but not probable. My father and I share narcotic allergies, but many people have them. Take a small dose and see how it goes.

This is something you really need to discuss with you Dr., I suggest you call right way before you even attempt to try and take your meds.
