The role of a Police Officer, whether as a full-time regular or else as a Special, is both challenging and rewarding. If you want to help your community and local Police Force then go for it. You never know what situation you will be dealing with from one moment to the next. You need to be able to think on your feet and communicate reasonably well. Unfortunately, the only visible reward you will receive as a Special is that you can go home at the end of shift knowing that you made life a little better for someone somewhere. Whether it is locking up an habitual wife beater, returning a lost child home or else giving a Regular the confidence to deal with a job because you are there to back him up if the poop hits the fan, you will have made a difference. Unfortunately, there is little thanks involved with the job especially from the public.
Contrary to what the previous answerer said you will not be taking away valuable overtime from regular Officers because few Constabularies have any funds available for overtime in this day and age! And most Forces rely on the extra manpower volunteers give them in order to boost the number of Coppers on shift. The public would be amazed at how few Officers there actually are on duty at any given time of day. It isn't like the Bill where there is a canteen full of Coppers just waiting for the next shout. So like I said it is all about making a worthwhile difference.
Good luck!

I believe that they have something to prove. Some want to show how big they are others do feel that they can make a difference but nowadays they are few and far between. My recent experience of police in general left me with a very unfavourable opinion of them as a whole. I was not personally involved but a friend who was walking home was set upon by a police dog which ripped his leg somewhat, his mate had his armpit ripped and whilst they were in hospital for treatment another lad was brought in with the same . I am old enough to remember when Bobby's were Bobby's and they knew the neighbourhood they worked in and everybody knew them and life was a lot more pleasant but these days. Like you say a lot of them these days are thugs hiding behind a uniform and not a lot of them are liked. The trouble is that the whole justice system needs overhauling so that criminals are not made to feel heroes among their peers and the police return to what they should be. Back on the beat within their own manor and then maybe we might get a more civilised society again. Once you get started on a theme like this you can go on forever, I've said enough for now.

How would you like it if I volunteered to do your job and use up any overtime hours you could work!! Not worthwhile at all!!! Its kiddie on policing on the cheap. There is a call for it in rural areas but not in highly populated areas which needs more police officers at the front line.

What you are really saying is shall I put on a uniform and be used by the police authority to save them money and do the regular officers out of their overtime. If you think thats worthwhile go for it.

Ask yourself this, would they have you as a propper police officer Yes or No?

If it is what you want to do then yes. It is giving something back to your community - however if you lived where I live then I would say no!!

Sorry but to put up with what Police officers on the street have to put up and do it for nothing you've got to be mad. There is no way I would do it for nothing.
