change your lifestyle. Do not dwell in self pity. exercise, go for walks, go out with friends, eat right. If you do not change your lifestyle you will always be depressed. Pills are not the answer, there is no quick fix to depression. You would be surprised at how good you feel about yourself after a good work out.

In most cases, yes. If you are depressed, you should really make an appointment with a doctor and ask about medication. You can exercise all you want and change your diet, but that will only help to a certain degree. You should know that depression is a medical condition and thus a lot of the time requires medical intervention. I hope you feel better soon! Take care. :)

You can start by changing your diet. You'd be surprised at how getting rid of sugars, processed foods, microwavable meals, and junk will greatly improve your mood within a matter of days. Eating healthy, balanced meals with lean meats and proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbs balances your brain chemistry. Getting exercise raises endorphin levels, which make you feel good. Turning to friends or religion for encouragement helps. Volunteering and making yourself useful and needed can lift your spirits.
Aside from all those things, if you're a woman, you could have a hormone imbalance that's causing you to feel down, so testing with an endocrinologist is a good idea.

You can help it greatly by exercising and eating right, but why not seek help? If you have a chemical imbalance you most likely will not be able to shake the depression without medications. If your depression is situational (i.e. due to current circumstances) then it might go away on its own. I suggest talking to a doc!

Take 5-HTP. It is the herbal equivalent of an anti-depressant without all the horrible side effects. The NOW brand in the orange bottle is the best and cheapest. Here is a link to read about it:

You can buy this at a health food store or online!!!

No, I don't think so. I think therapy is just getting help changing your negative thought practices and medication is a temporary aid which doesn't get at the cause. It is pretty fashionable today to call depression a medical problem or a chemical "imbalance" whatever that means. Depression I think is a result of errors in thinking that maximize the emotion of sadness to dangerous lows. It is caused by habits of negative thinking. What is a negative thought? It is dwelling on; a failure on your part, a word or comment that is unkind or derogatory, a difficulty in your life that seems to you to be impossible to overcome, etc.

I have gotten out of a negative thinking cycle by willing myself to think positive thoughts until the depression lifted. Sadness is one of the 6 basic emotions you are born with. It evolved to give us a signal to alter our course of action when that course led to things perceived as inimical to our well being. You can prove this to yourself by recalling that when someone says an unkind word to you or you flunk a test you get an immediated sinking feeling of your "spirit". This lowering of our self esteem may lead to further negative thoughts and thus deeper lows. If continued as a cycle of negativity it can result in depression.

You can break up this cycle by thinking positively. A positive thought results in a lifting of our spirits. By concentrating on thinking of positive things and doing things we like, this pattern of negativity can be broken up. It is difficult at first because the mind slips back into thinking negative thoughts easily. You just have to concentrate on thinking only positive thoughts. Will yourself to think positively and don't relax your concentration. Soon you will experience a lifting of your mood. When this happens it is like a new vista opens and it becomes less difficult to think positively What is a positive thought?

It is of someone you love, of something you like to do, good friend's comments, cheerful music, about achievements you are proud of or someone has complimented you on, a job well done, a dear dream of yours that seems attainable etc.

Once you have broken the cycle don't allow yourself to go back into the negative thinking pattern. Good luck, Peace and Love.
