The stomach bug that's going around has hit our house. What's the best way to soothe an aching stomach for an 18-month-old? Is it best to stay away from milk?

Yes, I'd stay away from milk. It could sour in her stomach and make her worse. Give them very simple easy to digest foods. If he/she's throwing up, give him/her lots of pedialyte or the generic...It will keep them hydrated. I've used a product by "Gentle Naturals"...has a lot of natural ingredients in it that help prevent your child from throwing up. It may take 2-3 doses before he/she stops completely...but in my experience, it has helped tremendously. DO NOT give your child Pepto Bismol...there's something in it they're not supposed to have. If he/she has a fever, infant tylenol or motrin is the best you can do to keep him/her comfortable. Good luck...and I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon!

It has been my experience with my own stomach flu’s that the only thing that tastes the same coming up as it did going down is water.

You should stay away from milk and solids and just hydrate with a little bit of water. And I stress a little bit of water. It is better to have only a little water that stays down than to upset a tummy by overloading it with to much water. My son once went for three days without solids and the doctor was not even the least bit concerned.

Hydration is what is most important.

After that, cuddles and cartoons.

Yes stay away from milk. Give them bland food like crackers or oatmeal but no milk. I found out the hard way. My daughter had the bug a couple months ago and every time I would give her mil she would throw it up. Plus the throw up smells really bad when they drink milk. Get pedialite to keep them hydrated and make sure they drink plenty of water. It only lasts for a week or so, so hold on.

Yes, definitely no milk. I suggest a BRAT diet. My son had same problem few months ago. He had a diarrhea for a 3 weeks. All test were fine. Doctor wanted to take him for an observation, We stayed at the hospital for 4 days. He was on a BRAT diet and soy formula( he was 18 months old)mix half and half with water for the first 2 days. He is fine today but it was exhausted for all of us. Just remember no milk. He'll be fine!!

I went through the exact same thing, and then again with my third child. C-sectioned as well. This is what I found/worked for me. 1) It is an adjustment period for your son, and making him feel a big part of it will go a long way. You can do this by letting him know that this is "his" baby as well. I used to tell my toddler that "our" baby needed changing or feeding, instead of "the" baby (the child already feels that everything is about "The Baby"). I found this let her feel connected to what was going on and that she was important. I also found that letting my toddler "help" with small things (taking diaper to garbage can, helping me dry the baby, passing me things, made her very proud, and less resentful of the attention I was giving to the baby). 2)As for the not picking up.... It was definitely hard, but there are ways to get around it. Reading stories/Watching movies was a great way to hold/cuddle my toddler without lifting them. Drawing/coloring was also another activity where I could sit very near and snuggle up with her (we just did it on the couch instead of up at the table) Also, it really does not take long before you are at the point where you can get down on the floor again...just don't push yourself. I find that the sooner you get moving in the hospital, the faster you heal. This does not mean olympics in the hallway, lol! The more you sit/lay the stiffer you become. So no lifting, but lots of moving.... I hope some of this helped, and CONGRATS!!

Yes, avoid Dairy Products.

Go with the BRAT diet for a few days: Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast. This will help with diarrhea and vomiting from upset tummy.

You may want to get some pedialite or at the very least make sure they are drinking lots of water and/or juice. Apple juice is great. Make sure they are keeping wet diapers, to watch for dehydration.

Good luck!

YES you do not want to see milk come back up (it is not pretty really) you are going to want to give them pedia lite, gaderade anything with lots of electrolites. Also Lots of cuddling and gently rub the tummy may help. Baby's Tylonal only if they have a fever and if they can keep it down otherwise salt crakers and lots of fluieds is the best you can do really. Don't use juices like apple juices because they are both urinary and bowel dieretics aka stool sofeners.

Yes stay away from milk and get some pedialyte. If it goes on more than a few days call your doc.

Stay away from milk. . Buy some pedialyte and use that instead. It replaces the electrolites your child loses when vomiting and diarrheah are present.

Try warm Chamomille Tea ( I think that is how it is spelled)? Any how but not too much. Talk to your pharnacist about Emetrol.
