Well, the word residential comes from "resident" or to "reside", which is to say, "live". So, a residential home is where somebody lives! There are many different kinds, of course. But a residential home usually implies either a live-in facility for the elderly, or those with some sort of mental/physical/emotional handicapp.

Residential home is where people go into if no-one can look after them. My father-in-law has altzimers and started going in the beginning for one day which has now built up, soon he will be there permanently as my mother-in-law is now having a job to cope with him as she is in poor health herself. Its hard for close family around him but he doesn't know any different. The home has carers that look after people.

Are referring to a nursing home. There is also assisted living facility. The nursing home has nurses and people to care of the residents. Some are completely bedfast but some patients are able to get up and walk. Assisted living gives some care but the resident is mobile and able to do some things for themselves.
