Safety first! Exercise intelligent, rational safe operating procedures. Couple that with mature and moral application of responsibility and the issue is then closed.
Beyond that you have people who never have & never will respect anyone or anything so no amount of gun control can or will provide for positive results. That will only play on the fears of society and serve to undermine our consitiutional rights & allow our freedoms to be taken by uneducated individuals acting on emotion & not with reason.
What possible good can any gun control measure provide when you try and regulate something out of the hands of someone who does not have the ability or desire to care?
Simply put, locks will only serve to keep out an honest person. A dishonest person does not and will not respect gun control laws so how can that protect us?
Gun control cannot replace responsibility and until measures/laws that require accountability & responsibility are properly enforced all gun control will ever be is a knee-jerk reaction, nothing remotely close to a reasonable solution!

Most of the previous answers summed up how I feel about gun control. If all firearms are outlawed, murder & violence will still occur. People will resort to using Basseball Bats, and knives. What next? Outlaw Baseball and Steakhouses?
The Sheeple need to wake up. Why is the USA the most powerful nation on Earth? Because we're free, and we have the Bill of Rights. Remember, without the Second Amendment the Bill of Rights is WORTHLESS.

Gun control is trying to legislate for several reasons. The biggest is that we as citizens are too stupid to own a device that is simply a tool. The guns in the hands of a policeman protects lives, but in the hands of a civilian its "dangerous". Sorry but I don't buy that anymore than the government can spend my money better/smarter than I can (taxes). Gun control is really people control. The 'elite' controlling the 'everyday folks'. A gun is a tool, no more, no less. It can be abused. A drunk driver can kill someone, just as easy with a car as someone with a gun, but we don't have legislation banning cars as dangerous and therefore no one should own one. My guns, my families guns, my friends guns, have never killed anyone, so why try to take them from me?

Gun control is the solution of the simple minded. It completely fails to address the real issue of criminals. That's much tougher to deal with.
Most proponents of gun control will not even recognize the positive benefits of an armed population. And I believe that those who truly think gun control will reduce crime are simply ignorant of history and current evidence right in the US and in other places such as the UK and Australia.
I also think that many people who are anti gun are simply fearful. A man with a gun is far more independent that a subject without one and that terrifies some folks, mostly a certain brand of politician.

it is our constitutional right to own guns. the federal assault weapon ban was a load of bull*****. the liberals definition of an assault weapon is not the true definition. an assault weapon is any rifle that has a capability of select fire (safe, single, full auto) the assault weapon ban was only about cosmetics (pistol grip, detactable mag, folding/colapsible stock..etc.) and anoher thing, the majority of crimes are not commited with an "assault weapon", most are done with a handgun. some of those anti politicians had something happen to them in the past that made them want to ban guns (they themselves being shot or family member being shot and killed)...those people are miserable to this day because of it and they have set out to make us feel the same way. we have a right to protect our lives, family and property. the police will not be there 24/7 to protect us. do you want to live on your knees for the rest of your life? think about this, "no one has ever been killed by a gun, but lots of people have been killed with a gun". guns are a harmless inanimate object, until some nutjob gets behind the trigger. guns just dont go off by themselves, guns dont go in search of people to kill. and because of lunatics that decide to go on a rampage/massacre/shooting spree, it is us law abiding citizens that will be affected by it. we never did anything to deserve having our guns taken away. no matter what you do, what guns you ban, the criminals will still find a way to get them. and they will get them illegally. so then if guns are banned we are left to the mercy of criminals who are armed and we are not. support the 2A and RKBA!

Gun Control is a great idea. I mean it worked in these countries...
In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929-1953, approx.
20 million people were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938. From 1939-1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies and others were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948-1952, 20 million political
dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. from 1964-1981, 100,000 Mayan
Indians were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971-1979, 300,000 Christians
were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975-1977, one million “educated” people were rounded up and exterminated.
Now civilized nations like Britain and Austrailia may have the honor of becoming the next Gun-Free country.
Currently America has very strict and effective laws on who can and cannot buy a firearm. And yet the people who are restricted from owning firearms still manage to get them. That should tell you that no matter what laws you emplace, criminals will still get their hands on whatever they want. Banning certain types of firearms only hurt law-abiding citizens. I don't think too many criminals would be able to buy one from a store. In fact, only +/- 10% of the guns that were bought in a gun store were used in a crime by the direct buyer.
For some reason people seem to think that the more defenseless you are, the safer you are. The Constitution states that "...The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be INFRINGED." Therefore any law that prohibits law-abiding citizens to own whatever gun they please is unconstitutional. It's amazing how angry people get their "freedoms" bent, at worst. Yet are up in arms (how ironic) when demanding stricter gun control, which is a direct violation of the Constitution.

The regulations and processes governing gun control are only as good as the authorities that enforce them.
Should these be applied like intended, there would be no problems.
There are more unlicensed firearms then licensed, it is easy to buy or obtain any unlicensed caliber gun you wish to these days .
To own a licensed firearm is stressful, you are bound to be shot with your own weapon should you carry one and you are not above average expert and alert .
This is my opinion .

The vast majority of "gun control" laws are irrational and un-Constitutional. I agree with a previous poster that the only law on guns we need is prohibiting CONVICTED CRIMINALS from purchasing guns. Everything else is just feel-good BS that serves no purpose.
The Second Amendment has no specificity as to "arms", so for anyone to say its only about "hunting" or doesn't protect so-called "assault rifles" is more non-sense. ARMS are ARMS - both your 5-shot Rem 700 sporter and your AR-15 with 30-rnd mags. On top of that, people who use the term "assault rifle" have no clue - owning a true assault rifle requires a BATF stamp. The commercial AR15, M1A, A-O Thompson M1A1, etc. are semi-automatic, and there are no semi-automatic "assault rifles", no matter how they look, function, or how many rounds they hold.
As to comparing owning a drivers license and registering your car, to guns that is another BS answer. Show me where in the Constitution does it say its your RIGHT to own a car? They may have had horses back then, but thats not there either now is it? Its every law-abiding citizens right and civic duty to know firearm safety, own a firearm, and know how to use it. Free people don't need permission to bear arms, and its in the Constitution - there is NO arguement for gun-control.
Prosecute CRIMINALS, not inanimate metal objects called firearms.
