I have had 4 teeth pulled at this point, 2 wisdom and 2 molars....I waited a minimum of 12 hours after the bleeding stopped to smoke. If its been three days you should be totally fine. I know any dentist would tell ya that :) And since I just got one pulled today please smoke a cig for me too... I have a few more hours :)

I had to have all my teeth extracted including 4 impacted wisdom teeth, due to the amount and the complexity of the surgery i was put under and they were taken out by a specialist. All he said in regard to smoking was it is no good for you anyway! I smoked as soon as i got home from the operation and have carried on smoking 30 a day since, everything has healed well and i haven't experienced any pain after the 1st week so i am sure you will be fine if you chose to smoke.

Realisticly the chances for dry socket are already present because you are a smoker. The reason for not smoking is the drag from a cigerette or even a straw is the pressure it creates. You have a nice clot that has formed hopefully and by now you may have a cigerette if you wish , I would do salt water rinses after each cig. Please don't drop kick anyone. I give post op instructions all day long and people smoke when they shouldn't and I tell them the drag is what can be a problem, because you already have the chemical element in you mouth already, but try to give it at least 24hrs. If you have aloud yourself 3 days without a cigerette like the others suggested you should try to quit. Best wishes.

It's the suction, but the smoke will irritate it and make it bleed more. You probably should avoid smoking for atleast the first few days. Plus your face will be so swelled up for the first 2-4 days it'll probably be very difficult to smoke. I know I couldn't even drink well for the first two days when I got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled last year. I didn't smoke anything untill I was off the pain killers like a week or so later.

I smoked the day I had my wisdom teeth out ten years ago. I wasn't told that it could dry up the socket. If you have reservations about it, have a drink of water after each drag. Anyway, the socket is meant to dry up. Go have a ciggy before you get real stressed.

my husband smoked right after the surgery last month and he has paid dearly for it. he had to go back 3 times and has had major pain for 3 weeks. i recommend not to smoke until they said, but i think they told him to wait 3 or 4 days. what about some nicorette gum or something like that? maybe a candybar would help.

DON'T DO IT! Not only could you get dry socket, but it will take longer to heal properly, if it heals at all!
Borrow a patch or two from someone you know that's quitting, as even the nicotine in the gum could transfer from your saliva!
GOOD LUCK, and, maybe you could look at this as the impetus to quit for good! I thought the extra tax on cigs would cause me to quit, but I'm still struggling... :{

MELODY,
THE SMOKING CAN MORE EASILY BE GIVEN UP NOW THAT YOU HAVENT HAD A SMOKE FOR A FEW DAYS. YOU WILL APPRECIATE THIS IN YOURSELF IN YEARS TO COME. GOOD LUCK, AND PLEASE BE KIND TO YOUR CO-WORKERS WHILE WAITING TO QUIT.
