I'm a 21 year old college student, with a part time job. I've received something in the mail from my work, another place I worked at during the summer, and my college sent me something in the mail about deductions and stuff too. I AM SO LOST! I have never done my taxes before because I always had someone to do them for me. I really don't want to pay and go somewhere like H & R Block.... but I have no idea what I'm even supposed to do with all this stuff! Any ideas? Tips? What would be the easiest way to do my taxes? And when do I need to have them done by?

please feel free to message me on yahoo

Contact the accounting department of your university. Most universities offer free tax preparation for students done by accounting students.

Also, look up VITA. he prepare taxes for free as well to lower income individuals.

Since you go to UT (listed on your profile) there is no state income tax. So you do not have to file unless you make more than $1250 ($2500 if married) in interest income outside of Tennessee.

you can file yourself online at www.turbotax.com. it is really easy to use. you can order the basic edition. the forms you received from your jobs are W-2s. the form from school was probably a 1098 showing how much tuition was paid.

your tax return is really easy. you just need to input W-2s. the software will ask you if you want to file a state return. depending on where you live, you may or may not need to file a state tax return.

taxes are due by 4/17

email me if you need any help or have any other questions.

Most likely, you're a 1040EZ filer. Get the forms and the instructions from your local post office.

Read the instructions. Don't be overwhelmed with them. Really, if you just follow them, you'll find it easy.

You can get help online. Most of the tax software companies (e.g., TurboTax) have free online version of their programs for 1040EZ filters.

You need to have them RECEIVED by the IRS by April 15 (this year, since that's a Sunday, it's actually the 16th).

The first answer is good. Don't forget to do your state return too. Due date is 4/15. If you get confused just pay H&R Block to do it this year - next year you can do it yourself using this year as a guide. The tax software at www.irs.gov may link you to state income tax forms too. If not go to website of your state dept of revenue.

If you do your taxes online they will be much easier and a lot of the free sites out there will figure out where everything needs to go. You should go to www.irs.gov and sign up for E-file. Select a vendor from their list and enter in the information from your W-2 and school statements. It will be much easier than doing them on paper. If you are to do them on paper though you will probably use a 1040 and those are rather complicated documents. Another suggestion is to go out and purchase Turbo Tax which essentially does the same thing as the online file sites.

If you are completely lost, you might want to rethink not wanting to pay someone to do your taxes.
If you want to give it a try, I recommend trying turbotax.com - it is reasonable, walks you through, and can help you.
You can also read up on how to do your taxes by checking out Publication #17 at www.irs.gov this publication is like the 'master' instructions for taxes and will direct you to other publications as needed.
