Firstly, when in any big city (including DC) there is no 'safe' area. There are safer areas than others, but the minute you start waltzing around with your head in the clouds is the minute you get mugged. You need to be aware and alert no matter where in DC you choose to live, even if it is the most expensive neighborhood in the city.
That said, as a general rule, the NW areas of DC tend to be a bit safer than other areas, but you do, of course, pay for that. Generally anyting WEST of the Rock Creek Park--see this map.
http://www.washingtonsbestaddress.com/neighborhood_map.htm
Some areas listed on the East side of the park are also nice, and some very trendy. But the farther East you go you move into more transitional neighborhoods and even in to some quite scary neighborhoods.
Capitol Hill, NearSW, and Brookland/Catholic University are some NE/SE/SW neighborhoods that are also passable. But, as always, you need to stay alert and aware.
Have you considered roommates? It's a very 'DC' thing to do as so many young people come to Washington just out of college and take rather low paying public policy jobs such that they are forced to share the rent. There are many group houses in DC--just check the political newspapers like Roll Call and the Hill, along with the message boards in the Congressional office buildings and other government buildings. Coming to a new town like DC is a lot easier when you have some roommates to help show you around.

If you are in the city anything at a good price will be in an unsafe neighborhood. Northwest is the nicest/safest part of town, but also the most expensive. You can find some cheap places in Northeast in a reasonably safe neighborhood. Anything on the other side of the Anacostia river is where most crime is in DC. You could also choose to live across the Potomac River in Arlington,VA. Right across the river with great places to go of its own.

Try anywhere in Northwest DC - kind of expensive but you can find deals. That is generally the safest part of the city though. Also if you'd consider a very close-in suburb then check out Silver Spring. It's still on the Metro and right on the DC line, and it has its own downtown too with restaurants, stores, bars, theaters, etc... It's a good area.

I lived in DC for awhile, and you might want to consider something that is not directly in town, but a little outside of it for affordability. Takoma Park was very nice-and affordable. Just be choosy about the street you live on-some parts of it are great, others not, just like any city.

None unless you want slum lords and trashy, drug infested, killings going on. You may want to consider some outside communities like, Silver Springs, Md, Chevy Chase or go into Va which is only right outside DC

I live in dc there are no affordable neighborhoods in dc. the average house in dc is about $ 450,000, condos are about $ 200,000-300,000. Large homes that are in dc in safe neighborhoods are about 1million +. if your looking for affordable look at one of the cities around dc.

i'm sorry to assert this, yet looking a secure community for in trouble-free terms $a million,000 a month basically isn't going to take position in DC, a lot less one that is gay pleasant or in walking distance of a Metrorail end.
