112th St runs from the FDR drive in the east across the borough to Riverside Drive and the Henry Hudson Parkway. Between the FDR and 5th Avenue E 112th St is largely populated by working class Puerto Ricans, Mexicans and Dominicans. From 5th Avenue to Morningside Park (where the street dead ends - because the park has a really big cliff that's way too steep to drive up) W 112th St is largely populated by working class African Americans and West Africans. On top of Morningside Park W 112th St resumes and continues to it's terminus at Riverside Drive. In that area, W 112th St is largely populated by middle class White people (most of whom are Jewish). This is the Columbia University area, and St Lukes Hospital, the Cathedral of St John the Divine, Columbia University and Bank Street College take up much of 112th St.

As far as "dangerous" goes - it depends what you mean.

You can get robbed anywhere in the city (even in the White neighborhoods). And, if you are looking to buy drugs, you are looking for trouble (either from NYPD Tactical Narcotics Team or from the dealers) and it WILL find you.

But, if you conduct yourself in an alert but friendly manner, and act like you belong there and know where you are going, you will be perfectly safe.

We have White tourists from Europe, Asian tourists from Japan and the affluent White kids who attend Columbia University up here in Harlem ALL THE TIME and they never get bothered

Maybe because they come to our neighborhood with an open mind, don't bother anybody or do anything illegal and they don't assume the neighborhood is "dangerous" just because Blacks and Latinos live here!

No, it's not, I'm not sure what avenues you'll be near, but on the east or west side 112th street and anything near it is pretty safe, and I say that having lived on 109th on the west side for the past 25 years, so, my whole life, and not knowing anyone who's ever been a victim of a crime or overt harassment.

When I was living on Manhattan I found that the biggest factor as to whether or not it was dangerous was whether or not a person is AFRAID of "the big city!"

If you are afraid of the city, muggers can spot it a mile away and will probably choose you as an easy target. If you are not afraid of the city (and take reasonable precautions) they will probably choose an easier pigeon!

West 112th is very near Columbia University and is basically a college town area. East of there is a mostly black and Hispanic residential area. It's not particularly dangerous.

i'm not sure exactly what the reason your asking, maybe your moving there, but different people have different views on this sort of thing, like if im from harlem i wouldn't think so at all, know what i mean? you can call the local police station, tell them you are thinkin of moving there and would like a crime report and i would get one from an area your more familiar with too so u can compare.

It depends on where on 112th street..
The closer to Central Park, the safer, as a general rule.
