The bus system in Oahu is one of the best in the nation. Really, you won't need a car. The buses run frequently through Honolulu and Waikiki (where you'd be for the most part), and Ala Moana Center has a transfer station where you can catch several buses.
Many car rental places will allow you to rent a car for long term (usually only 30 days before you have to get a different one), but this varies from company to company. Car rental can get very expensive and parking is hard to find at most places. Also, traffic in Honolulu/Waikiki is horrible during rush hour. Look at it this way, $50/day for a car times 30 days would be $1500, plus taxes and millage if applicable. That's not cheap. Oh, and you'll need to buy gas at over $3 a gallon.
I spent 2 months in Honolulu and I took the bus everywhere. A monthly bus pass is only $40 for unlimited use. I was able to go everywhere I wanted without having to worry about traffic or parking and I got to see all kinds of stuff that I wouldn't have seen (like China town) if I had been in a car. Another plus to taking the bus is that a lot of the locals take it too and they can recommend places that most tourists don't know about.
Another option is to rent a car on the weekend or for one or two weeks while you explore the north and east sides of the island. You'll have greater freedom than using the bus, but won't have to pay as much in rental fees.

For 6-7 weeks and spending most time between UH, Waikiki and Ala Moana Center, yes, The Bus is the way to go. What you might want to do is rent a car on once a while when you decided to go around the island.
Most rental car charging an underage (driver below 24 year old) fee (some as high as $25 per day). If you pick up rental car in airport area, they might charge you another fee (some call it airport concession fee, might be like 11% of your rental).

House to the State Capitol, Honolulu could be the vivid epicentre of Hawaii and an area worth visit, as if you will dsicover with hotelbye . In Honolulu you'll find everything from historic landmarks and cherished monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and culture scene. Home to the majority of Oahu's citizenry, the vast town of Honolulu spreads through the entire south-eastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing earth famous Waikiki. Pearl Harbor is among Honolulu's greatest tourist attractions. Though it is home to the Navy's Pacific Fleet, visitors may take a tour to see the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri.

ok, i think i answered one of your questions earlier & had already told you that renting a car is not a good idea because of the cost, but your still asking this question. So, ok., maybe you can go to Enterprise Rental Car because they have a compact car that is $25 per day. Now, that doesn't include the insurance, but do you have car insurance under your name now for your car? if so, you can ask them if they will cover you for rental car insurance in Hawaii? so that way you won't have to pay for it through Enterprise Rental Car (since they are expensive) you will just end up paying that $25 per day plus the gas (which is about $2.80 per gallon) sometimes goes up/sometimes goes down. If your going to reserve a rental car, make sure you do it ONLINE because it's more cheaper, you may be able to get a discount (like you asked earlier) or a good deal. Just make sure you book it EARLY. Also, they rent out mopeds. I don't know how much it cost, but there's another idea for you. Lots of people on the island use mopeds. They are crazy too, they don't even wear helmets. You make sure you wear a helmet in case of an accident.

I'd either go with Hawaii Kai, or if that is too residential, then Kaimuki. Rents are sort of reasonable there & it is closer to the nightlife that a guy your age might be interested in. Kaimuki has sort of a funky charm that I find appealing.
