Use this substitution for corn syrup: 1 cup corn syrup = 1 cup sugar plus 1/4 liquid (water or whatever other liquid is called for in the recipe). I've also read that rice syrup can be substituted directly for corn syrup.

Honey, molasses, maple syrup. If you don't want the sugar content, then use pancake syrup sweetened with artificial sugar substitutes, available in the supermarkets.
What are you making?

The Betty Crocker cookbooks says 1 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar. I tried this once and the results weren't great. I bet I'm supposed to heat it up first to dissolve the sugar into a simple syrup.

corn syrup is basically liquid sugar.
in a pinch, you could heat sugar in as little water as you can get by with and use that.

Golden syrup, maple syrup etc... depends what you are making. They choose corn because does not really add much flavor.

So maple flavor may be good or bad thing......
