It is the scar tissue under the tat becoming irritated. It happens to my tats sometimes as well. It also happens to my surgical scar.

The reason this happens is often because of stress. It can be regular stress (like youre stressed out about an exam or about life), or it could be your body reacting to another kind of stress (like a food allergy).
Your body is trying to 'push out' anything that is foreign to it, such as tattoo ink. I have had my tattoos for several years, and still to this day if I'm really stressed out, certain colors will raise up.
Otherwise what causes it is most likely the ink reacting to sun exposure. Black and red are commonly affected by sun, any prolonged constant sun exposure causes it to swell. Its nothing dangerous and is perfectly normal. take a benadryl and it will go down no probs.

Are they all from the same artist? I know if the artist isn't properly trained he can tattoo too deeply which causing scarring. That could be one of the reasons it is raised....As to the itching, I don't think that's really a problem. Mine itch every once in a while. Could be dry skin?

I have a sleeve that does that to. Its very annoying and you just want to rip your skin off. I've been told it could be cheap ink. What i do to soothe the problem is keep an anti-itch cream around and apply it when needed. The itch will last only minutes after applied. Before i started using the cream i used a non-perfume/non-scented lotion. That worked to but not as fast. As far as i know there isn't anything that will "cure" the itch. It's a small sacrifice for ink. Well Worth it to me.

I've known of people getting tattoos that will react like this a few years later... usually red and after a lot of sun exposure. It's nothing to worry about, but you may want to stop in to your artist and bring it up as they're more likely to know what's going on than your GP (many of which aren't exactly mod-friendly).

ooooh, that happened to me!! horrible!!! I just kept putting lotion on it and it helped a bit, but it took a week or two for it to subside completely! Seemed to get worse when I would hop in the shower...like the moisture or the heat bothered it?? I have had this for almost 10 years, and last year was the first I have ever had an issue w/ it...

Hi Drdo, Sounds like an allegery. I would go to the artist and ask him what he thinks it is. He will be glad to ask your question. You have 11 tats that is cool. I have 5 tats and thinking about getting 1 more. A Friend.

I've only got 2 and one of them does this.....I'm not quite sure what it is, but the parts that raise may be the parts where the tattooist dug a little deeper than other parts. Mine doesn't last for hours though. If you find out what it is let me know!

I get this occasionally too, not just with tattoos but with any larger scars on my body. I'm not sure what causes it -- some sort of irritation, or perhaps the tattoo didn't heal as good as it should have. It doesn't seem to affect their appearance.
