I had one of these scanners, a few years ago, had the same problems as yourself, tried downloading drivers, no joy. I aged 10 years in a fortnight, my hair went grey, enough was enough....As roadworks were being carried out, outside my house, i waited till the steamroller came passing by, then i chucked it under the main wheel... now the scanner is no more.. I agree wholeheartedly with you Packed bell products are crap...Hope this helps you feel better. Dave B

What do you mean by "normal scanner software?"
If you're talking about drivers, you've already been given a few sites to check.
If you're talking about graphics packages, many of them will allow scanning from them. You simply have to indicate the Twain device (scanner) that's connected to your computer. (You may find it under File > Import.)
If you're talking about scanning a document, so that you can edit it in a word processor, you'll need OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. There's a free one available from the following site. Obviously, because it's free, it won't be as comprehensive as some of the heavy weight packages. Give it a try anyway.

If it relatively is between the parallel port scanners, you're out of success. It purely won't artwork on domicile windows above Win98 - era. certainly, maximum non-printer parallel port gadgets including tape backup instruments, zip drives, CD-ROM drives, had drives....if it used to hook as much as the printer port, XP purely would not enable the drivers to straight away control the port the way they must so as to function. I even have anumber of parallel port gadgets, and that i ought to save a Win98 device around in case i ought to apply them. The upside is that scanners are inexpensive, and as great as a results of fact the outdated parallel port epson scanners have been, you simlpy won't be able to cause them to artwork on XP. have faith me, i've got tried.

It would be more helpful if you could provide the scanner model, however you could try to install the original driver from either of these websites:
1) http://www.scanner-drivers.com/companies/456.htm
2) http://www.opendrivers.com/categorycompany/16/11712/scanner-hp-free-driver-download.html
Hope that helps!

Go to --start--control panel--system--hardware--device manager--imaging devices-- check status of drivers--or click drivers and update or roll back and you might have to work around it from there.
