i still see a picture. it's as if someone just pushed pause. does this mean that the dvd player is no longer any good? i have done the "canned air" cleaning. the dvd's are clean and not scratched. the dvd player does this on brand new dvd's as well as rented dvd's. has this happened to anyone else? what did you do to fix the problem?

You need an internal cleaner. It comes on a disk. That has happened to me and that is all that works. The air just moves dust around. The Laser gets crud on it and it needs cleaning ever 5-6 uses. Especially the Toshiba.

I find that this happens to me almost everytime I watch a movie. I watch the dvds on my Xbox360, and on the dvd player, and either way it still happens. I think it is something to do with the dvd's themselves.
I'm interested in the right answer as well.
