Enlisted in the Army at 17. Have been trying to get bonus for 1 yr. Contract states bonus to be paid upon completion of AIT. Have all the paperwork in, recruited got involved 5 months ago, and still nothing. Was shipped to "A" and was told 20% of them would not be returning. If any of them haven't recieved their bonus' too bad....Army don't pay dead guys. Is this a breach of contract and can I recieve an honorable discharge?

There are people you can talk to. Talk to your First Sergeant. It is his job to help you with things like this. If he won't help you, talk to your platoon leader, or your CO. Talk to the JAG if all else fails. But also remember that the military takes forever to pay things out, and while 5 months may seem like a long time, it really isn't. But definately check on it using some higher power's help.

That bit about them not paying dead guys - that's crap. You signed a form listing a person to recieve your SGLI as well as all unpayed pay and allowance, right? That bonus falls into that category.

no this is not a breach of contract. you may be missing your high school diploma, you should contact your retention NCO. He will be more likely to help you out than your recruiter. Further the reason this is not a breach of contract is because if you read your contract fully you will see a clause that states "or as the Army needs" which basically says they can do what they want when they want and you can't say anything about it. Good luck

You know the military, "hurry up and wait". It's only a breach of contract if they don't pay you at all. Keep pushing for it through your chain of command. If a soldier gets killed, the family gets the bonus. I was in the USMC and it's just a thing you have to put up with due to the war. Keep pushing for it, they might get a little tired of you but keep at it, you'll get it one way or the other.

Good luck and don't give up.

Did you talk to finance at your base? How about JAG? Your Commanding Officer? The IG? Exhaust all your options before you freak out.... Plus you can always find Civilian Military Lawyers in the phone book near bases.
