Tragic as this my sound, I believe that it is part of his plan. That we all have a purpose in this life, and that if that means that one is an amputee, then so be it. We can never be certain how our lives will influence others. We are here for that influence.
Do you want me to expand on it? I will. Let's say that you have a friend, Joe. Joe is an Iraq War Veteran, and his legs are gone. He has come home, scarred and changed. He is no longer the loving, happy person he left home being. He does the best he can though, going through life and making his choices that he believes will be the best for him. Throughout this, people watch him. They see him, what he does every day - where he goes. How his outlook on life has changed and what it has become. It can affect them positively or negatively. But you do not know how. Neither does Joe.
Let's say that a child observes Joe, observes his struggles, and when he grows up, he is dedicated to finding a way to help people gain their mobility and independence back. The way that he helps people starts a chain of influence.
What if the child chooses to respond negatively instead? What kind of influence does that have? What will it have over his own children?
It is a purpose. We each serve a purpose. We are the way we are supposed to be for the influence.

Would Stephen Hawking be so motivated towards intelligence if he was born with a functional body?
Hawking is severely disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS (a type of motor neuron disease.); this condition is commonly known in the United States as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
When he was young, he enjoyed riding horses and playing with the other children. At Oxford, he coxed a rowing team, which, he stated, helped relieve his immense boredom at university. Symptoms of the disorder first appeared while he was enrolled at Cambridge. He lost balance and fell downstairs, hitting his head. Worried of losing his genius, he took the Mensa International test to verify that his intellectual abilities were intact. Diagnosis came when Hawking was 21, shortly before his first marriage, and doctors said he would not survive more than two or three years. He battled the odds and has survived much longer than any other known ALS patient, although he has become increasingly disabled by the gradual progress of the disease.
Just wanted to clear that up. He was extremely intelligent well before his illness.

Satan's deception and Adam's disobedience in the Garden of Eden caused all manner of imperfection in the world. Amputees are just one of many results of this imperfection. Immediately following Adam's disobedience, God made a provision (Genesis 3:15) to correct the problems that would result, up to and including even death. Soon, Jesus Christ will turn his attention to the earth, lock Satan and the demons in the abyss and rid the earth of all who do not know or obey God. Then amputees will grow healthy limbs, old people will grow young again, sick people will get well, we will use 100% of our brains and the dead who remain alive in God's memory will be resurrected back to life again. In the meanwhile, do not lose hope. It is a promise and God's word does not return to him without results.

Think of life's trials as a storm. This is a hardcore storm in the middle of the ocean. You are hanging on with every bit of strength you posess as the boat is tossed like a feather by the wind. If you cry out to God in that storm "Please help me! God please help me through this storm. I'm so scared I'm going to drown!!" God will hear you. He may choose to still those waves and the wind and warm the deck dry for you so you can get safely to your destination. But He might instead have a reason for that storm you don't realize. He might want you for some unseeable reason to go through that storm. So instead of calming it, He puts strength and resourcefullness in you so you can posess the will and knowlege to get yourself through that stom. Then, after the sun comes up next day, you will be a better sailor for it.
Maybe this storm is the loss of limbs and it's so hard to see how that can be okay. If you have prayed for a miracle, but it is apparent God isn't going to give you the exact miracle you want, change your prayer. Pray instead that He give you the strength and resourcefullness.

To the person who stated this - There have been instances of amputees being healed...
What proof do you have that amputees were healed.
Who was healed? When & where?
Give some names please. Some newspaper documentation also required.
To the person who said - Why should a mere mortal question God.
I am gasping. Who told you that we do not have the right to question God?? Did God tell you that? Did your Bible tell you that?
Where in the bible does it say we cannot question God?? Moses was always questioning god, so did Abraham, even Jesus questioned God.
We ALL have EVERY right to ask questions - of God, of preachers, of teachers, our parents and anyone else.

There were times when Jesus would not do miracles. He knew that the people just wanted a show. They still would not have believed that He was God's Son. God does not ignore amputees. Or anyone else who has a relationship with Him.
In the future, they will be made whole. Those who belong to Him trust Him and believe this. This earth is only a passing through place.

If God granted us our every wish, He would be a genie, not God. Also, by giving us everything we want, it would make us not want Him, it would make us feel as though we didn't need Him, that we were better than Him.
Also, not every prayer is answered. Can you imagine everyone in the world praying for a billion dollars and getting it? Think of all the spoiled children that would create!

Actually read the Bible....and you'd already know the answer. Look around....we have a war on, some 20,000 maimed so far alone on our side.....why are all those men not asking your question? aren't they the ones missing limbs? what do they realize and know that you haven't?
Simple fact. God CLEARLY says....if you fight, eye for an eye. So if you fight in a war, don't be surprised when God takes something of yours since you took something of someone else. We follow this exact same principle in law and courts today...and eye for an eye.
For those that lost it due to disease or other reasons. Then only they can answer why they lost it. Either they didn't follow his word, he has a greater mission for them and removing the limb is what sets the person onto that life path. Could be the devil himself had invaded the limb and to save the soul and the body, God had the limb removed.
No different than that man few years ago that went hiking out west and slipped and had a rock fall on his arm and pin him. After a few days he realized.....either A. I stay here as a whole human being and die...or B. I cut my arm off, lose it, yet continue to live.
We all have a mission in life, we don't know what that mission is. But once you complete it, you will be taken from this earth I believe. This is why some die young and others old. Why some in accidents and war and why some of natural causes as we call it.
Your mission might be as simple as to steer a single soul back onto the path, a 5 minute talk and thats it. Or it might be to lose a limb to then become the inventor of a new artificial limb.
Man considers what happens today as bad or good, instead man should look as God does...at the whole picture. As every little item in our life that happens to us, actually shapes us and forms us into the very person we are, the very individual that we are.
PS - you lack the common sense intelligence cause if you think having money or all limbs is living a complete and happy life, you are sadly mistaken. I would have to guess you are young, under 22 to not realize how life works yet. You have yet to see the life circle that you will follow and repeat in your life. Adults have seen this and understand it, thats why we have more insight. No different than why you have more insight than say one who is 10 yrs younger than yourself. This is why the line "listen and respect your elders" came from. But so many choose to ignore this line.....but its true.....if you listen to those older than you, you will learn something, as they have already lived the very path you walk today, the path of confusion.
Plus read up on how prayer works....you can't just ask for money, or an arm back...DUHHH....anyone kindergardener who has understanding of prayer gets this fact.

What life decisions have we made that out us in that position.
Maybe God sees a big picture, and the only reason we don't understand him is because He's describing a walk in the park, when we're looking at the picture of a dog.
Why should a mere mortal guestion God?

Well, technically speaking, being an amputee is not an illness-it is the result of an ilness or injury. So, maybe God/dess looks at it this way- there's no use healing the symptom if the illness is still there. It would be like treating a broken leg with aspirin...good for the pain, but it's not helping your leg set correctly, is it?
Or maybe, you're right and I'm overrationalizing this and there is no reason....or there is one and we can't understand it.
