I moved down to the hampton roads area of virginia from long island, ny recently. I'm totally shocked at the difference in driving.

I realize new york drivers are stereotypically agressive drivers, myself no exception. However, i've been all around the country (west coast, gulf coast, north east) and nowhere are drivers more frustrating than in virginia.

dont people understand the left lane is for passing? i get so enraged when someone in the left lane is going EXACTLY the same speed as the person in the right lane, namely on 'rt. 64'.

sorry if you're from virginia, i dont mean to insult, i'm just aggravated

I lived in the Hampton Roads area for 4 1/2 years. Interstate 64 is one of the most frustrating, annoying, idiot-filled highways I've ever seen. How do you like that tunnel traffic? Or the 10 (at least) accidents every single day? The problem with the entire Hampton Roads area is that there are probably 100 different driving styles there. You've got all the kids just out of boot camp who haven't had their licenses for very long, coming in from all 50 states, and there are also a lot of foreigners in the area as well. That gives you the textbook definition of "clusterf*ck". Oh, and I didn't mention the ungodly number of completely, certifiably retarded people there. Some jackass was poking along on Rosemont Rd in VaBeach, so I passed him. A couple minutes later, I'm on the exit ramp to get onto 264 east towards the ocean front, and he tries to pass me. ON THE EXIT RAMP!!!! I was doing well over the speed limit. He was just being insane.

Hey it drives me nuts too! I'm in MN and its everywhere. BUT if you or anyone exceeds the posted speed limit to pass your breaking the law. So what do we do, I take a mellow out pill and count to 10. If its winter and I'm in my 4X4 truck with the plow on it and people block the left lane, remember this. I will be the big red plow with the smiley face on it right up on your back end so you can read my plow. Hit your breaks on me and you will wear my blade as you go into the ditch. Yeah its a bummer but quit doing this stuff to others when there is plenty of room in the other lane for you to drive in. I have even seen the state patrol here have problems with people doing the same thing here and the idiots don't even see them!
What I do may be wrong but it gets the point across to many and I don't want to hurt anyone, Just give us a little more room to get where we have to be. Oh and ALL the emergency vehicles that you are also blocking because your in your own little world daydreaming while driving. Enough Said? Most likely NOT.

Mike
To anyone out here I make mad at me. I'm sorry!
Bye

From Connecticut here and you are right about the drivers in this area. I live in Maryland but the same situation exists here. It's as if the Mason Dixon line puts folks into some sort of confusion as to whether they're Northerners or Southerners. This results in the left-lane-camper ... they sorta wanna go fast but don't wanna seem like they're in a hurry. Please hang up the cell phones .. and that includes the plastic cockroaches in your ear too.

By the way, New Yorkers don't drive with aggression, they drive with assertion. It's a predictable way to move on the road that let's the other drivers know what your intentions are. Up North 90% of people drive this way and there aren't a staggering number of vehicular fatalities as a result. Whereas a person doing the posted speed limit in the left lane (inconsiderate and unpredictable) will certainly cause other drivers to experience accidents.

Those inconsiderate morons are everywhere. We have plenty in New Hampshire as well. It drives me completely and totally insane. I really don't understand why people do this.

One time my bf was driving and talking to me on the phone (yeah, I know bad), but he was on the highway. There were these two import tuners (aka Ricers) and they were having a grand old time, each was in a lane, and they were going the exact same speed. My bf said he could see them laughing their butts off and enjoying annoying the other drivers. Maybe some people do it because they think it is funny to tick everyone else off?

I agree...it is super annoying. I wish people would get pulled over for it. They are disturbing the flow of traffic and leading to road rage.

No, they don't understand the concept of "keep right unless passing". Look folks, whether it's the law or not isn't the issue. It's about consideration and efficiency and safety. Some states make it the law (like Maine). Other states don't. Whether it is legally required or not, stay to the right unless you're passing someone, and if you do pass, do it quickly and get out of the way of all the folks trying to go faster than you. This is true even if you are going the speed limit (or faster). The general rule of "keep right unless passing" is more considerate, more efficient, and safer at all times than "drive in whatever lane you please if you are doing the limit".

Obstructing other drivers is evil. Evil. EVIL. EEE-VILLE!!!!!! Selfish, proud, inconsiderate, unloving, failing-to-do-unto-others as-one-would-be-done-unto, just plain evil.

Hey, there! I'm from LI and now Upstate New York where if they don't cow tip, it's only because the movies kept making fun of them for it.
Now, you gotta be kidding me, right? The left lane on LI is NEVER for passing. There are too many goddamned people to call it a passing lane.
I was one of the young drivers who knew how to deftly weave in and out, specifically BECAUSE there were idiots who hogged the left lane at 65 mph.
So, relax, adjust, you'll be OK.
At least you live somewhere with more than one lane per side!

That varies dramatically by how urban the road is.

In rural Wyoming, EVERYONE obeys the "left lane is for passing" rule. In Iowa, with lots of cities people drive between, not so much. In Chicago, there's no lane discipline at all. I just consider that normal, and I think nothing of it. In cities, I pass on the right -- in the country, never.

It also varies by how busy the road is. I-81 in the Shenendoah valley is rural, but there's too much traffic for "drive right pass left" to work decently.

When in Rome...

In California the left lane is just the fast lane. Unfortunately for me (I drive the speed limit) if there are 3 lanes in a 55 zone
Right is 60
Middle is 65
Left is 75
Of course this all changes when an officer shows up, then all lanes are 60.

The Left lane is designed for passing, However if the person in the Left is going the speed limit then.
a. You should slow down as you are breaking the law
b. Pass them on the right as you are speeding and you really have no reagrd for safety.

But if they are going slower than the Speed limit then they are.
a. ignorant to the fact, (probably on a Cell)
b. they want to pass but the ol' bucket just won't go there anymore.

Take your pick and do what us midwestern people do, sit back and relax, cause when you pull up in the parking area and you are the first one, you win!

Try New Mexico It can be a four lane road with nothing for miles. And they still stay in the left lane. Especially pickups and SUVs. They think they own that lane.
