It sounds bad but nobody is going to say they do that .Ive it seen it too. In trust of a friends house.Like when mom has only one piece of gum and she is chewing it .Son wants it and throws a fit I know many parents would jump.

No I have not seen this happen before, although it may gross people out, it is perfectly harmless, that is unless the parent has been diagnosed with a deadly disease. I can see the logic behind it though, not the gum- a child under five should not have gum, it is a choking hazard: however, other foods that may be too much for a youngster to chew thoroughly, because children under three get tired of chewing and would swallow the food whole. So I can understand the logic behind such actions, but it is unnecessary since there are many appliances that would perform the same effect just as easily

I never did that, and I disagree with the person who says its harmless unless someone has been diagnosed with a deadly disease!!
Perfectly healthy adults can carry bacteria in their throats like haemophilis influenzae, which may not make the adult sick but which could kill a child. (I realize these days children get the Hib vaccine, but I'm just using this one bacteria as an example. There are others like it.)
Also, a person can be contagious with any number of illnesses without yet having developed symptoms.
So, not only is this behavior disgusting, and not only does it show little respect for a child's right not to have someone else's spit in his mouth, but it is potentially dangerous.

I've bitten ice into smaller pieces for my niece...no one complained about it. It's not like I put the whole thing in my mouth and turned it into a mushy mess....I wouldn't do that with gum or any other foods, though.

My daughter is 2. I dont chew her food but sometimes I would have to bit it into smaller pieces for her. But its not like I slobber all over her food and then give it to her. People who actually chew there food and then give it to there kids is absolutly discusting!

It's not okay to do. By sharing items from your mouth with your child you are introducing cavity- and bad breath-causing bacteria into your child's mouth.

Personally, NO WAY! I have seen it lots of times too. I think it is gross but I think that parents who kiss their kids on the mouth is gross too. God gave babies smooth cheeks on the face for kissing.

Haven't done it. Adults have been exposed to more bacteria and virus than children and I would be concerned about that.
If I were interested in doing this, I'd probably ask a doctor first.
