As a Humanist, I find it very easy to accept that not everyone thinks as I do. I truly believe in freedom of religion and belief and recognize diversity as one of the greatest assets of humanity. I shake my head daily at those who claim to cherish religious freedom but really only cherish everyone's right to believe as they do. (See Jinenglish and Fireball226 as examples.)

From the questions, or in some cases, attacks posted here, it is not just members of certain religions. Atheists posting here seem to have great difficulty accepting others do not think like they do and can be very abusive about it.
I think your question should really be, why do people have difficulty accepting the fact that others do not think like they do. Once that fact has been accepted, we can start to make progress. And the reason is, we all have a need to be right.

The bases of many if not most religions or belief systems are that they are RIGHT; their founders are regarded as infallible, their words recognized by their adherents as law. From that lofty viewpoint, whatever promises or rewards the system offers are available only to true believers, thus the followers feel a divine obligation to spread the word and to make conversions lest the unenlightened or disbelieving be condemned to hell or to whatever punishment is the converse of their paradise. Theists are likely to insist that there IS only one method of belief which can lead to salvation...

Perhaps they are not confident in their own beliefs and do not know how to express their own doubts. I think most people that truly believe as they profess to have very little problem that others believe differently. They feel concern over anothers choice because they think it is wrong, but in general most would not become upset over anothers belief. When a belief causes harm to others then there would be problems accepting that someone thinks that way.

I am sure there are many reasons.
Here is one reason (not the only reason)
Think about medical science, if you have a theory, you do test to prove it. As an example lets say you found a cure for cancer. There are going to be people out there that think your lying and are going to require proof. If you prove you have made a cure, it pretty hard for someone to still tell you are lying. (some) People think that their religion has proof, but are unable to convince others. I am not saying that they are right, but in their minds they are. They think they are trying to save people, but are unable to convince them.

Some people are very imbalanced. To allow anyone else to believe that s/he is right, would implicate that there may be even the slightest chance that the person is her- or himself wrong.
Which would threaten the very foundation of his or her whoel life, because, because, because...
because s/he is desperate to believe in something, and wouldn't know how to go on living without it.
My father and a former best friend of mine, and two of her family members, are examples.

What religions are you talking about? Islam because they kill infidels? Christianity because we are told to tell of God's Grace? I already know that others will not believe what I do. There is nothing wrong with expressing our beliefs though, we are supposed to. We know that most will not accept God's Love and Jesus' sacrifice. Nothing I can do about that.
May God Bless you.

Because they think they're right and that everyone should be like them. They refuse to believe that other religions can have good points in them.
