I freak out even when I see a Daddy Longlegs! I scream out of pure fear when I see even the smallest little spider. I love mice, rats and have several animals including lizards and snakes. (I don't feed my pet mice to my pet snakes! They eat goldfish! And not the crackers) And I don't even mind most bugs, but any spider will send me running and screaming. Does anyone have any scientific advice on getting over my fear of spiders? And no "just pick one up" crap either! I can't even get close enough to them to kill them. Anyone? Advice for a severe arachnaphobe?

I know they are not spiders. But they have eight legs, they're a spider to me!

maybe, and daddy long-legs are spiders and the most poisonous but their mouths are so small they cant bite you, they eat small insects, and i saw how they used virtual reality to help one girl get rid of her fear of spiders where they put on a visor that showed computer spiders and had her touch a toy spider at the same time, so maybe you can buy a toy spider and play with it . and i used to have a PlayStation game that had a little spider that ran around obstacles and avoided danger like most video games, so maybe you can find a game that has spiders in it, and by the way at the end of the session the girl touched a real spider!

i have always heard that people are afraid of things that are strange to them. instead of actually picking a spider up, try doing research about them on the internet, find out about the different types of spiders, their life span, etc. they may not seem as frightening but i know a fear of spiders is hard to get rid of! when i was a little girl i could pick up a spider and put it outside if i wanted to but now i only get a piece of paper and a cup because i am too afraid to touch it. every time you see one just picture yourself as small as it is and imagine looking up at a huge, screaming person. i hope this helps!

have you tried reading about them, watching discovery channel when a show on spiders is on and stuff like that. I think if you expose yourself to them a little more then maybe you wont be as afraid. and if you have more information on them maybe that can get you over some of the unreasonableness of your fears

My best friend is exactly like you. You arent alone. She is 37. Her fear has gotten worse as she has gotten older. She believes it all stemmed from when she was younger and one of her houses had lots of huntsman spiders. Now she cannot even stand the thought or sound of them. We have to say 'incy' around her, not spider, or huntsman, or trantula. She is honestly petrified! I never really understood arachnophobia until i met her. She believes its the legs and the eyes that frieks her out.

As i said she thinks it has gotten worse as she has gotten older. So i would recommend you go get some counselling about it. I know it would be hard, but you can do it!

You have total control over your mind. Meditation and visualization can help with ANYTHING. Meditation doesnt always mean sitting down indian style eyes shut too, you can be fully active and in the state meditaion provides. Just mabey next time you see one really far away, take deep breaths and slowly exhale, this will provide your brain with a blast of oxygen and regulate your heart rate, which in turn should provide you with a relaxed calm feeling, then watch it , examine it and observe that it just is an insect that cant really think much beyond instinct, get closer if you want. This is about the best therapy for anxeity disorders, as it is all in your head, we all fear , your not any different, sometimes some of us can just control it. Spiders r icky creatures, but imagine what happens to your meat right before they pack and ship it next time you eat it, thats kinda icky too, but most of us are over it.

I am so sorry. I can't help you . . . I am terrified of them too. I think I might have Arach thingy-ma-bob. I go all sweaty and hot, and I usually start crying. I just can't help it . . . I'm just so scared! I remember in class one day a fearless boy in my class picked up a daddy long-legs and chased me around the class with it! I couldn't help screaming and crying. I got told off and everyone teased me.

Pick one up in a controlled environment?

Seriously, You know, I shut myself up in my room and refused to come out when my parents brought Hepatitis-B Vaccine, cos I am (or am i now? ) dead afraid of needles, you know.

I usually don't watch ER and change the channel whenever I see a doctor/nurse giving an injection to anyone ( or when Action Heros try to remove bullets from their bodies with hteir knives. Hell I was watching desperado, and skipped forward when Salma Hayek administers all that first aid to Banderas in a scene)

But I caught Jaundice some time ago, and absolutely had to get a blood test, and I could hardly, at my age, bawl like a baby when i went for the blood test, But seriously, it didn't hurt that much, and I managed to save my pride!

Okay, that's one phobia conquered for now. Lets move on to Lizards and snakes, Hey you don't have any problems withthem! Any tips on how I can stop fearing them? I would rather stay far far away from reptiles!

Hypnotherapy. It can be very effective at "fears" such as yours. Do some research on it to see if you might want to try it.

Ha.I recently moved to the county side & house being under construction,, I thought I was afraid of spiders til I saw the "wolfies" that were here.lol.They are huge & black & run right at you.Id be sitting in the living room & there would be a couple running across the floor,,one on the ceiling ,,one in the shower,,you get the idea.It was creepy to say the least. My brother said that we would bomb the house on the weekend. Then,,I crept in the kitchen one day to quickly grab some corn chips,,looking around all the while,,all of a sudden I looked behind me & one was running up behind me where I had to lift up my leg & spin away from it,,whoa. What was different about this one was that,,no lie,,it was the size of my hand,,must have been the mother spider,,when I lifted my leg & spun,,it ran under the clothes drier & it had to DUCK to get under it. =Ol That was it for me,,I called my brother at work & told him to come home with the bombers because we were bombing that night,,lol.
