The Westboro Baptist Church from Kansas came up to York to protest at York Senior High school. York Suburban High School's drama club did a play called "The Laramie Project", which deals with the reaction to the tragic 1998 death of Matthew Shepherd, a gay college student who was tied to a fence and beaten to death by two men.
The Westboro Baptist Church carried hand-painted signs with the words "God Hates America," "God is Your Enemy" and "Fags Doom Nations."
They met a counter-protest from a crowd with more than 10 times as many people who told them that neither they nor their message are welcome here. More than 150 from York and the surrounding area, who knew from the media, the Internet, myspace, and word-of-mouth the Westboro folks were coming, braved bitter temperatures outside the school Saturday night with their own message. "Go back to Kansas,"
This is the same group that wanted to protest at the funerals of the Amish Girls that were killed, but at the last moment didnt.

I would organize or join a counter protest. I would recruit everyone I could to join the counter protest. If there truly is evil working in the world, this "church" is one of the group it works through.

I have often considered driving down there (I'm just in Nebraska so not so far away) and organizing protest outside their "church."

They came to my town in NH when I lived there and my town in TN a few weeks ago. The best thing to do is ignore them. Counter-protests can turn violent. This is what WBC wants. They are all lawyers and sue the city for not providing police protection for their demonstration. And they get moocho money. The worse their taste, the worse they are treated, the more money they make. It is pretty simple. Leave them alone or have a silent protest. Never react violently.

They came to near where I lived to protest a funeral. They got stopped when the Division of Family Services showed up and said they would arrest them if they showed up at the protest with their children (which they planned to do) for child endangerment and put the kids in foster homes. The group decided to head back to Kansas and didn't protest.

Westboro. **growls** I had hoped that those bigots had finally drank the tainted Kool-aid and rid the world of their filth. I personally have nothing against religious folk. Nor do I often call for public displays of violence, but those Westboro folk need to be dragged into the street, tied to fences and beat to death.

I am sorry to say it, but they are not worthy of being called human. They are sub-human filth. They give filth a bad name. I'm with the guy from the UK, they need to be hung.

If Fred Phelps (whom I suspect is a second cousin of mine) ever showed up with his freakin' congregation at the funeral for a local veteran, I'd put on my Veterans of Foreign Wars cap, pick up a large American flag down at our American Legion Post (I'm commander of both Posts), gather my fellow Patriot Guards around me and go out to prevent Fred and his mindless followers from ever getting within shouting distance of the fallen hero!

They have no place anywhere. If I had nothing better to do, I'd definitely go tell them to go elsewhere, because they are morons. They don't represent Christ in the least. It takes a lot to make me angry (a LOT), and they manage to do so.

I think Dream Theater says is best:

"Listen when the prophet
Speaks to you
Killing in the name of God

Passion
Twisting faith into violence
In the name of God"

They've been to my community several times. People have held counter protests, but I think it's best to just ignore these morons.

they are a bunch of disgusting, pathetic bigots, who are no better than radical jihadists who use Islam to spread hate. The only difference is that these baptists are using Christianity to spread hate.
