I work through my local volunteer center to find some diverse projects that cover various local community needs. Volunteer centers work with the various non-profit organizations throughout your area. Through my volunteer center, I've found various projects that meet my own community needs. I usually work with many of the mentoring programs, but the environmental programs I've worked with are:

Beach cleanups
Trash pickup at the park
Gardening and weeding at the local park and hiking trails
Painting and renovation of community centers
