I began having stomach pains yesterday - pain located centrally under the ribcage and feeling like cramps. The pains come and go but seem to be aggravated by movement. I have no sickness but did have a bout of diarrhoea this morning. Is this likely to be gastroenteritis or something more sinister? Should I be trying to eat or not - I don't really have any appetite at the moment...

The chances of it being something sinister are not high compared with the chances of it being something just annoying. However, something is wrong so you shouldn't ignore it and suffer needlessly while you hope it goes away.

You may have muscle cramps either in your intercostal muscles or diaphragm, or it may be a hiatus hernia, or just a wind pocket (these can be very painful and take ages to disperse).

To put your mind at rest, make a note of what you were eating and doing for 24 hours before the trouble started and if it's still there after 36 hours see your doctor.

PS. You're not a pregnant woman by any chance?

Greasy or high fat food and acidic food like citrus juices, carbonated drinks should be avoided. A tablespoon of coriander seeds is a natural home remedy for stomach aches, to be eaten after meals. More home remedies for stomach ache at http://www.aches.in/homeremediesstomachache.html
