I am trying to shed a few pounds of fat and am wondering if I should avoid all types of sugar altogether because of the insulin response they cause in the body. Should I avoid fruits for a while as well? Or does the body only raise its insulin when it encounters refined sugars?

All sugars raise insulin levels- the question is how quickly. The fruits to eat regularly are green apples, strawberries, berries, apricots, grapefruit, oranges, plums and peaches.
Eat moderately: grapes, mango, kiwi, melon, watermelon, pineapple.
East sparingly: banana, raisins, fruit juices.

all sugars are not created equal. fructose is metabolized using a non-insulin dependent pathway via the liver, it does not cause insulin to spike as it does not cause a rapid increase in serum glucose. fructose however is converted to lipids at a higher rate than glucose based sugars. glucose based sugars will cause insulin to spike.

body composition is a direct indicator of insulin sensitivity. if body fat is high the body has a problem with metabolizing glucose bases sugars so they should be consumed at a minimum until body fat levels are under control.
