Joining a Service is always a personal choice. I just joined the US Army Reserves at age 42, correcting a mistake I made about 20 years ago when I decided NOT to go with ROTC and I'm THRILLED about it.

I would LIKE to be deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan so I can help out!

Why do you want to join? There are great benefits, but also great costs. To me, the benefits FAR outweight ANY costs, so joining was a very easy decision.

As to going to Iraq, it's a lot lower for the Air Force than for other services - but who cares? Even if you DO go in the USAF, you're not likely to be placed in any sort of a combat situation. Even if you WERE, it's not our soldiers who are getting the short end of the combat stick over there. The terrorists refer to Iraq as "The Graveyard of Al Queda".

Further, let's suppose the unlikely event that you DO go to Iraq, you DO get put into combat and you DO get injured - your odds of surviving are better than if you were in an auto accident here in the US. And to a much greater purpose.

Sit down, talk with your folks, talk with your recruiter, talk with some buds in the Air Force, and decide why you want to serve - because you are SERVING. And if it's for the right reasons, join up and I'll proudly call you brother!

Hooah!

I've attached some links for you to read from some embedded bloggers who are talking about the Infantry combat in Iraq - these guys are there on the ground with the pointy end of the spear. The stuff you see on TV and read about in Newsweek and Time and the papers is Al Queda propoganda. Read the stuff from the people IN Iraq and Afghanistan for the real picture.

EDIT: To the above commenter: "helicopters plucked out of the sky" - Their loss rate is about 1 chopper per 100,000 hours of flight time. Low for any combat environment.

you do what you think you should do. don't ask anyone else if you should do it. find out the facts and then decide for yourself if it's for you. no one else has the right to say whether the military is right or wrong for you. as for your chances of going to iraq, yes, there is a chance. a pretty good one too. not as good as say marines or soldiers, but still pretty good. you'll be on base and all that stuff but probably won't see too much action. the amount of AF casualties are EXTREMELY low. do what you feel is right. but if you join, accept the fact that you very well might get deployed and don't fuss and complain when that time comes. joining the military is a commitment that you can't squirm out of too easily.

Its not a question of "joining" you must pass test or have a
proven IQ level to get in this military branch. Air Force is the least
active of all branches in Bagdad unless U are a fighter pilot or
a transporter plane personal. They fly missions in & out with only
a small chance of being shot down. The helicopters being plucked out of the sky are mostly army. The are relatively slow
flying air-craft.

Any branch of the militia you get into your gonna sometime or yet another would desire to circulate combat in Iraq, its basically whats happening now. you will greater advantageous than probably be doing stuff which you %. as a occupation interior the militia, and so some distance as staying obtainable, there is no genuine answer to that, i've got heard sixteen months, yet some are being made to stay longer. so which you by no potential comprehend.

I have a friends who's husband just returned from Iraq and he is in the AF. Your chances of going are high but not as long as most branches of the military. He was there for about 2.5 months.
It is your choice ultimitly so you have to decide if you want to go in or not.
Whatever choice you make good luck.

If you are in the Air Force and go to Iraq it would probably be in an administrative or mechanical position since the Air Force does not do combat. I was in the Air Force in the sixties and went to Vietnam. I spent a year in Saigon working in intelligence.

The second part of your question says it all. I won't tell you what you want to hear, I'm going to tell it like it is. If you join, our armed forces will probably be worse than what they are simply because you don't want to go to Iraq. Wanting to serve but not deploy isn't serving your country, it's trying to get your country to serve you.

Joining service will always put you in harms way! However the air force is the best. Dont join the marines!

I you want to join, that is your choice, you always have a chance going to war. when you swear in you do agree to put your country first, and there is line in it that says to death. My cousin is in the air force, he just got back from Afghanistan, he is on notice to be ready in 48 hrs to go back, because of the escalation in the fighting. You don't have to serve in the military, to fight for your country, all you have to do is back up the soldiers, that are already there. ooh rah, god bless our country.
