i should rephrase my question, how can they be so uninformed about their friendly neighbour to the north. i mean sure cause we watch their tv shows and crap you would think they wouldnt be so dense considering we live thisclose to them.

I've met a lot of Americans when abroad, I must agree with you. The majority are rude and arrogant to the people of the country they are visiting. I used to live in a tourist town in Canada, and I dreaded having to deal with the Americans. So often they were total jerks.

But strangely, when I've visited America, they've been very polite and helpful. What's up with that? Why should they be rude only when they leave their country? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Americans do tend to know less about Canada than Canadians do about Americans, but the primary reason is exposure. Canadians watch American ads, american TV, american news, etc. so get a great deal of exposure and so naturally pick up a lot of information about the country, lifestyle, persons in the headlines, etc. At the same time, similar exposure to Canada is not available to Americans, so naturally they haven't absorbed the same amount of Canadian information!

As far as being rude and arrogant, americans are viewed so in part because ther are more open and more insistent. and yes, there are plenty of rude americans, just as there are plenty of rude canadians, or any other country persons.

Another thing to consider is, Americans anymore tend to be on the defensive because everyone is always dissing them, and it gets very tiring the umpteenth time you get accused of being a stupid ignorant person by someone you just met simply because of the country you were born in !! Talk about prejudice! and some of the worst of it comes from Canadians, who pride themselves at being polite and hospitable and kinder!

No, I don't think all Americans are rude and ignorant. Certainly some are, as are some Canadians, Brits, Aussies, French, Germans, etc. I have met many Americans, am even related to some! I think that they, to some extent, have created a national identity that at heart is rather insecure which leads to some of their citizen's rather bombastic behaviour. eg. "Look at us, we have the best, we have the biggest, we have the tallest ..." What they don't seem to realize is that their many wonderful accomplishments as a nation speak for themselves, and other nations, who, for whatever reasons, are less accomplished, resent their chest thumping. On the whole I find Americans to be a great people. I enjoy them very much. I also am extremely proud to be a Canadian.

I have come across my fair share of rude Americans, however I know that there are also many friendly Americans as well. Many Americans are uneducated about Canada. Canadians watch American television and are more in tune with world events. This is just something we have to be prepared for when talking to Americans.
Have you ever watched the show "Talking with Americans"? it is too funny.

On the whole, the visitors from the U.S. that I have met are reasonably polite, reasonably well informed and no more arrogant than any other nationality. Yes, you do get extremes from all countries as well but because we, as Canadians get the mainstream U.S.daily through TV, do we expect the U.S. to know more about here. No. You get rude and arrogant from all countries including Canada.

I suppose you can say that but the truth be told I don't know much about their country. I'm talking about geographics and those types of details.

I educate myself about the importances like their politics but that is only because it influences the world and the worlds growth depends on their leadership.

I think most Americans are proud a trait they have carried with themself for centuries. Who can blame them?

I think that any stereotype is dangerous. Not "all" Americans are anyway. Not "all" Americans like baseball and apple pie, and not "all" Americans are rude and ignorant.

Sadly, just like any bad experience, it is that bad experience that sticks out in our minds. The "gooduns" we likely thought they were another Canadian. :) (Alright...the Texan drawl gave them away...but otherwise they blended in right fine) ;)

Hey Arby973...you forgot the camouflage boats! Like the fish don't think anything weird when a giant bunch of leaves appears in the middle of the lake? (I'm in NW Ontario too)

(just teasing about the boats)

I have been exposed to some really rude Americans but I know better then to label them all from a bad experience...they don't know much about us b/c... something is always going on down there...their president is always causing trouble...and since we don't have as much drama...we are exposed to alot of their news...but not the other way around
